Chapter 7 - The Trial and Retribution

With the legal nightmare officially concluded, Claire turned her focus toward building a bright future for her daughter.
Claire established the Eleanor Vance Foundation for Women and Children—a $50-million initiative dedicated to providing legal aid, emergency housing, and career retraining for mothers escaping domestic abuse and financial control.
Six months after the trial, Claire spearheaded Vance-Harlow International’s acquisition of a major sustainable technology firm, boosting the company’s stock by twenty-two percent and establishing herself as one of the most brilliant corporate leaders in New York.
At home in Greenwich, life was sweet. Lily was now a joyful ten-month-old baby girl taking her first steps across the library rugs.
One afternoon, Thomas Vance walked onto the terrace holding a letter from Sing Sing Correctional Facility from inmate #89421—Daniel Harlow.
Claire opened the envelope and unfolded the handwritten letter:
Claire,I am writing from my cell. I don't expect you to forgive me. Every day I wake up in this cold place, I am haunted by what I did. I destroyed everything... If you ever find it in your heart, please send me a single photo of Lily. I just want to see her face.Daniel.

Claire read the letter once. She picked up a silver lighter, struck the flame, and held the corner of the letter to the fire. She dropped the burning paper into a brass ash tray, watching until it turned into fine grey dust.
“Some bridge burnings are permanent,” Claire murmured softly, taking a sip of her lemonade.
