Chapter 2 - The Chairman’s Wrath

The quiet that fell over the driveway was absolute, heavy enough to drown the idling roar of the luxury sedans. For three seconds, Daniel’s face remained frozen in that smug, triumphant smirk. His mind simply could not process the words that had just echoed across the icy air.
“...Granddaughter?” Daniel whispered, his voice cracking like thin ice underfoot.
Arthur Vance, the founder and Chairman of the Board of Vance-Harlow International, did not glance at Daniel. He walked past the splintered white wood of the shattered crib with a dark, deliberate stride. Behind him, two senior corporate attorneys and Thomas Vance, the head of corporate security, fanned out in a perimeter.
Arthur wrapped his heavy black cashmere coat around my shoulders, drawing both me and baby Lily into his warmth. His hands trembled as he gently adjusted the wool blanket around Lily’s sleeping face.
“Dad...” I breathed, the dam inside my chest finally breaking. A single tear escaped, burning hot against my freezing cheek.
“I’m here, Claire-bear,” Arthur whispered, his formidable voice softening to a tender murmur. “You’re safe now. Both of you.”
Daniel stumbled backward onto the porch steps, his face turning an ash-grey shade of white. “Wait... Dad? Mr. Vance... Arthur... what is this? Claire is... Claire is an orphan! Her parents were schoolteachers from Vermont! She didn't have family! She... she was a nobody!”
Arthur turned slowly. The tenderness in his eyes vanished, replaced by a cold, predatory fire. “My daughter grew up under her mother’s maiden name because we chose to protect her from the media vultures and gold-diggers of the world,” Arthur said, his voice quiet, deep, and lethal. “She wanted an honest life. She wanted to know if a man could love her for who she was, rather than the three-billion-dollar empire attached to her name. And it appears, Daniel, that you have failed that test in the most monstrous way imaginable.”
Vanessa Hale took an immediate step back, her hands flying up to cover the stolen emerald necklace. Her eyes darted toward the iron gates, looking for an escape route, but Thomas Vance had already signaled two security officers who stepped quietly to block the perimeter.
“Mr. Vance, please!” Daniel stammered, his arms waving frantically. “There’s been a massive misunderstanding! Claire... Claire has been mentally unstable since the birth! PPD! Postpartum psychosis! She threw the crib out! She’s been threatening me! Ask Vanessa!”
Vanessa opened her mouth to echo the lie, but Arthur held up a single, leather-gloved finger. “Do not speak another word, young woman. The emerald necklace you are currently wearing was custom-crafted by Cartier for my late wife, Eleanor, on our twentieth anniversary. It is insured under the Vance Family Trust for eight hundred thousand dollars. Stealing it constitutes grand larceny under state law.”
Vanessa’s face drained of all color. She reached behind her neck with frantic, trembling fingers, struggling with the clasp. “I... he gave it to me! Daniel told me it was company property!”
“It was never his to give,” I said, stepping beside my father, my voice firm and clear. “Just as this house was never his to possess.”
Daniel stared at me, panic flaring violently in his eyes. “What are you talking about? I paid the mortgage! I bought this estate!”
“You paid rent to the Westchester Holdings Corporation,” Arthur’s chief attorney, Marcus Sterling, stepped forward, pulling a leather document folder from his briefcase. “An entity wholly owned by the Claire Vance Irrevocable Trust. You never owned a single brick of this property, Mr. Harlow. You were merely a tenant on a month-to-month lease, which has just been terminated effective five minutes ago for gross property destruction and breach of peaceful occupancy.”
Marcus motioned to two uniformed guards. “Mr. Harlow, Miss Hale, you have three minutes to vacate these premises. You may take only the clothing on your backs. Everything else—including the wristwatches purchased with corporate funds, the vehicles parked in the garage, and the jewelry—is frozen pending corporate audit.”
“You can’t do this!” Daniel screamed, his voice turning into a high-pitched shriek of desperation. “I am the Regional President of Harlow Industries! You need me!”

Arthur looked at Daniel with profound contempt. “Tomorrow morning’s merger meeting will indeed take place, Daniel. But you will not be attending as President. You will be attending as the primary target of an emergency Board of Directors investigation into grand embezzlement, fraud, and corporate espionage.”
Arthur turned to me, placing a hand on my back. “Get into the car, Claire. Let’s take Lily home.”
