Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Reckoning

The glass tower of Vance-Harlow International dominated the Manhattan skyline. On the 50th floor, in the main boardroom, forty executive officers and board members sat around an oval mahogany table. At the head sat Arthur Vance. To his right, wearing a tailored navy suit that replaced her old cardigans, sat Claire Vance—holding a sleek leather dossier rather than a diaper bag.

Daniel Harlow entered surrounded by three corporate lawyers he had hired in a panic overnight. His eyes were bloodshot, his suit rumpled, and his signature arrogance had morphed into a twitchy, defensive aggression.

“This is an outrage!” Daniel declared, slamming his briefcase onto the polished table. “I have served this firm for seven years! Whatever personal grievances Mr. Vance has regarding his daughter’s marriage cannot overshadow my legal rights as Regional President!”

Arthur gestured to Marcus Sterling. A series of financial spreadsheets flashed onto the massive video walls, covered in red highlight markers.

“Over the last eighteen months, you authorized $1.4 million in corporate expenses routed through shell companies registered in Delaware,” Marcus explained. “These expenses were categorized as ‘consulting fees’ for Hale Communications—a firm created six weeks after you hired Miss Vanessa Hale.”

“Standard expenses?” Claire spoke up, her calm, crystalline voice cutting across the room. “Including twelve separate stays in the Presidential Suite at the Ritz-Carlton? Including a $45,000 charge at Bulgari for a diamond bracelet? Including leasing a 2026 Porsche Cayenne in Miss Hale’s name using corporate credit?”

Claire touched a button on her tablet. A crisp audio recording began playing through the high-definition speakers:

“You’ve spent three years pretending to be some delicate housewife... You have no career, no income, and no leverage. Did you really think I’d stay trapped forever?”

Then came the sound of splintering wood—the destruction of baby Lily’s crib—followed by Daniel’s explicit threat: “You can sleep at a shelter for all I care.”

Gasps erupted across the boardroom. Several senior directors looked at Daniel with open disgust.

“That recording was obtained without consent!” Daniel’s lead attorney yelled. “It is inadmissible in any court!”

“This is not a court of law, counsel,” Arthur said quietly. “This is a board meeting of a private corporation. Under Section 14-B of the Harlow Industries Bylaws, any officer engaged in conduct bringing severe moral turpitude or reputational harm to the brand is subject to immediate termination.”

Arthur pressed a button. “Security.” The doors opened, and armed guards stepped in.

“Daniel Harlow,” Arthur announced. “You are stripped of all executive titles, effective immediately. Your stock options are revoked, and your personal assets are frozen under a court injunction.”

Daniel stood up, his face flushed with rage. “You think you can ruin me, Arthur? I own the proprietary algorithms for the Apex merger! Without me, the deal dies!”

Claire smiled gently, opening her folder. “You mean the algorithm developed by Dr. Aris Thorne?” Daniel froze.

“Dr. Thorne was my roommate at MIT,” Claire continued, revealing for the first time her double master's degree in Quantitative Economics and Computer Science. “He registered the patents under my family’s foundation. You didn't write that code, Daniel. You stole it from my personal drive two years ago while I was pregnant.”

The room went dead silent. Daniel looked at Claire as if seeing a stranger.

“Security, escort Mr. Harlow off the property,” Arthur directed calmly. “And deliver the evidence binders to the Office of the District Attorney.”
