Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Web

Three weeks passed. Claire had moved back into the historic Vance Estate in Greenwich, Connecticut—a stunning stone manor set upon fifty acres of rolling hills and gardens. Here, surrounded by warm fireplaces and dedicated staff, Lily thrived.
Claire was officially appointed Vice President of Strategic Development at Vance-Harlow International.
Meanwhile, Daniel’s existence had devolved into a nightmare. Living in a seedy two-star motel near Queens, funded by cash scraped together from pawnshops, he was desperate. Vanessa had abandoned him ten days prior, attempting to bargain with prosecutors by testifying against him.
One rainy Tuesday evening, Daniel sat in his cramped motel room staring at a half-empty bottle of cheap whiskey. His burner phone rang.
He snatched it up. “Hello? Is this the legal defense fund?”
“Daniel.” The calm voice made his blood run cold. “Claire?”
“I’m calling to inform you that the family trust has finalized the assessment of damages to the Greenwich property and the financial assets you misappropriated,” Claire said evenly.
“Claire! Please!” Daniel broke down, sobbing hysterically. “I made a mistake! Vanessa manipulated me! She seduced me! I didn't mean to break Lily’s crib—I was overwhelmed! I still love you, Claire! Think about Lily! She needs her father!”
Claire let out a soft, amused sigh that chilled him to the bone. “Lily does not need a cowardly, abusive fraud for a father, Daniel. And do not insult my intelligence by blaming Vanessa.”
“Please, Claire! I have nothing left!” Daniel cried. “I’m facing twelve counts of corporate felony charges! My lawyers abandoned me! Have mercy!”
“Mercy?” Claire quoted his own words back to him: “‘Take the baby and leave... You have no career, no income, and no leverage.’ Do those words ring a bell, Daniel?”
“You trapped me!” Daniel screamed.
“No, Daniel. You trapped yourself in your own greed,” Claire said coldly. “Tomorrow, the family law court will finalize my full custody petition and complete termination of your parental rights. You will sign the surrender papers voluntarily, or my legal team will present safety threat evidence to the judge, guaranteeing you serve your sentence in maximum security.”
“I won't sign! She’s my daughter!”

“She is my daughter,” Claire corrected sharply. “And you proved what you thought of her when you smashed her sanctuary. Sign the papers, Daniel. It’s the only merciful option you have left.”
The line went dead.
