Chapter 8 - The Arrest and the Ring

Within minutes, the elegant charity gala had transformed into a crime scene. Federal marshals, alerted by Adrian's legal team moments before their arrival, pushed their way through the front doors of the Grand Imperial Hotel.

Mayor Arthur Vance tried to push past the crowd toward a side exit, but two federal agents stepped into his path, their badges gleaming under the chandeliers.

"Mayor Vance, you are under arrest for financial fraud, corruption, and obstruction of justice," the lead agent declared, clicking a pair of steel handcuffs onto the politician's wrists as he thrashed and shouted protests.

As the disgraced mayor was dragged out of the ballroom in front of a frenzy of cameras and flashing lights, a profound silence settled back over the room.

Elena stood motionless in the center of the floor, the heavy weight that had crushed her chest for the past eight months finally lifting away. Her brother's name was cleared. His legacy was restored. The people who had whispered behind her back were now staring at her with a mixture of shock, awe, and deep, undeniable respect.

Adrian turned to look down at her. The cold, impenetrable barrier that usually guarded his expression was entirely gone, replaced by something warm, steady, and achingly tender.

"It's over," he murmured softly, so only she could hear.

Elena looked up at him, her eyes bright with unshed tears of relief. "Thank you, Adrian. I... I don't know how I can ever repay you."

Adrian didn't answer immediately. Instead, in front of every enemy, every politician, and every socialite in the room, he slowly dropped to one knee on the polished marble floor.

Gasps echoed across the ballroom. The most feared man in Ravenport—a man who bowed to no one—was kneeling.

From his inner jacket pocket, Adrian produced a small velvet box. He flipped it open, revealing a breathtaking diamond ring that caught the light of the chandeliers, sparkling with a fierce, eternal brilliance.

Elena’s breath hitched in her throat. Her hands flew to her mouth.

"When I first saw you standing in that restaurant, fighting against a world that tried to crush you, I knew you were unlike anyone else in this city," Adrian said, his deep voice carrying clearly across the hushed, spellbound room. "You are fierce, you are brilliant, and you are entirely unforgettable. I didn't just save you from the shadows, Elena... you brought light into mine."

He looked up at her, his gray eyes shining with unvarnished devotion.

"Marry me, Elena. Let me spend the rest of my life making sure no one in this city—or any other—ever dares to make you shed another tear."

Tears spilled over Elena’s eyelashes, but this time, they were tears of absolute joy. She didn't hesitate for a second.

May you like

"Yes," she whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. "Yes, Adrian. I will marry you."

The entire ballroom erupted into thunderous, deafening applause.
