Chapter 5 - The Plan

The rain outside had stopped, leaving the streets of Ravenport slick and gleaming under the pale light of dawn. Inside the penthouse, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Adrian had spent the remaining hours of the night downloading the contents of the drive to a secure, offline server and printing out physical copies of the incriminating financial transfers.
"What happens now?" Elena asked, standing by the floor-to-ceiling window as the first rays of sunlight broke over the horizon, painting the sky in bruised shades of purple and gold.
"Now, we play our hand," Adrian said, walking over to stand beside her. He had changed into a fresh charcoal suit, his tie immaculate. He handed her a sealed manila folder. "This contains certified copies of the bank transfers linking Mayor Vance’s offshore accounts to the shell companies that funded the hit on your brother."
Elena clutched the folder to her chest like a shield. "You want me to take this to the press?"
"The press can be bought, and local stations are easily silenced," Adrian replied coolly. "Tonight is the annual Mayor’s Charity Gala at the Grand Imperial Hotel. Every politician, judge, and elite socialite in Ravenport will be in attendance. That is where we expose him."
Elena turned to look at him, her eyes wide with disbelief. "A gala? You want to confront the mayor of the city in front of hundreds of high-society guests?"
"It’s the only way to ensure he can't bury the story," Adrian said, his voice absolute. "In a room full of cameras, security, and reporters from national syndicates, he won't be able to hide behind his usual excuses. He will have to answer for what he did."
"And me?" Elena’s voice dropped to a nervous whisper. "The whole city already looks down on me because of the debt my brother supposedly left behind. If I walk into that room, they will tear me apart with their whispers. They’ll call me a fraud, a liar, a desperate girl seeking attention."
Adrian reached out, his hand gently grasping her shoulder. His touch was warm, grounding her instantly.
"Let them whisper," Adrian said, his voice low, firm, and filled with a fierce conviction that sent a thrill straight through her heart. "By the time we leave that ballroom, no one in Ravenport will ever dare look down on you again. Because they will know that you are standing with me."

Elena looked up into his eyes. For the first time all night, the terror that had gripped her chest began to recede, replaced by a strange, burning resolve. She nodded slowly.
"All right," she said. "Let's go to the gala."
