Chapter 4 - The Revelation

An hour later, Elena sat wrapped in an oversized cashmere sweater that belonged to Adrian, sipping a cup of hot black tea. The warmth was slowly seeping back into her limbs, melting away the lingering chill of the rainy Ravenport night.

A knock echoed softly at the private elevator doors. Adrian walked over, retrieved a sleek black briefcase from one of his security guards, and brought it back to the coffee table. He set it down with a heavy thud, popped the latches, and lifted the lid.

Inside, resting neatly in a molded foam insert, was a small, titanium flash drive etched with a series of complex alphanumeric codes.

"Is that it?" Elena asked, leaning forward.

"That's it," Adrian replied. He pulled a small laptop from beneath the table, plugged the drive into the side port, and tapped a few keys. A string of encrypted directories began to scroll down the screen in a cascade of green text.

"Can you read it?"

"Give me a minute," Adrian said, his fingers flying across the keyboard with practiced speed. "Your brother was paranoid. He used a military-grade encryption algorithm. Fortunately, I have a few specialists who taught me a trick or two about breaking these codes."

As Adrian worked, Elena watched the play of light and shadow across his sharp profile. Up close, without the harsh lighting of the financial district or the chaotic panic of the alley, he looked less like the mythical criminal overlord the city whispered about and more like a man carrying an unbearable weight.

"Why do you care so much about what's on that drive?" Elena asked quietly. "It’s about city council corruption, right? Land deals, kickbacks. That’s standard business in Ravenport."

Adrian stopped typing for a fraction of a second. Without looking up, he said, "It’s not just land deals, Elena. The syndicate backing these councilmen is planning to takeover the port authority. Once they control the shipping lanes, they control every import and export coming into the state—including weapons and narcotics. If they succeed, Ravenport won't just be corrupt; it will belong to them completely."

"And you?" Elena challenged gently. "You own half the city. If they take over, your business empire suffers too."

Adrian finally turned his head, his gray eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her breath catch. "My empire was built on my own terms, Elena. I have rules. I have lines I don't cross. The men backing this syndicate? They have no lines. And they killed Daniel to protect their secrets. That makes it personal."

Before Elena could process his words, a series of sharp, rhythmic beeps emitted from the laptop.

A folder popped up on the screen, labeled simply: The Cleanup.

Adrian leaned in, his eyes scanning the first document. His face went entirely blank, but the muscle in his jaw ticked once.

"What does it say?" Elena whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs.

Adrian looked up at her, a dark, dangerous calm settling over his features. "It says your brother didn't just find out about the city council. He found out who is running the syndicate from the very top. And the name at the top of the list... is Arthur Vance."

Elena gasped. Arthur Vance was the current mayor of Ravenport, a man hailed as a reformer, a saint who had promised to clean up the city's streets.

"That's impossible," Elena breathed. "My brother... he trusted him."

"Power corrupts, Elena," Adrian said, standing up and closing the laptop with a sharp snap. "And Mayor Vance is about to realize that his secret is out."
