Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

The ballroom was a sea of crystal chandeliers, white linen tables, and expensive perfume. Conversations hummed at a low, polite frequency across the room, but as soon as the massive mahogany doors opened to announce their arrival, the sound died away completely.

Every head turned.

Whispers broke out like wildfire.

Mayor Arthur Vance, standing near the dais at the far end of the room with a glass of champagne in his hand, froze mid-sentence. His eyes widened as he saw Adrian Vale walking toward him with Elena Marlowe on his arm. A look of cold panic flickered across the mayor's smooth, practiced smile for a split second before he managed to mask it.

"Adrian," Mayor Vance said, stepping forward with an outstretched hand, trying to project an air of jovial hospitality. "What a surprise. I didn't realize you cared for charity galas."

Adrian ignored the mayor's hand entirely. He didn't stop walking until they stood directly in front of the dais, towering over the city's most powerful officials.

"Arthur," Adrian replied, his voice carrying clearly across the silent, tense ballroom. "Save the charm. We aren't here for the charity."

A murmur rippled through the surrounding guests. Several security guards in black suits began to edge closer, but a single, subtle glance from Adrian's lead bodyguard made them freeze in their tracks.

"I don't know what kind of game you're playing, Adrian," Mayor Vance said, his voice tightening as sweat began to bead along his hairline. "This is a private event. If you're here to cause a scene—"

"A scene?" Adrian interrupted, his tone chillingly polite. "Not yet, Arthur. But I think the guests deserve to know the truth about who is running this city."

Elena stepped forward, her hand still resting lightly on Adrian's arm. She looked out over the sea of wealthy socialites, judges, and councilmen who had spent months whispering behind her back. Her voice, clear and steady, cut through the quiet room.

"My brother, Daniel Marlowe, didn't drive off that bridge by accident," Elena said, her words echoing off the vaulted ceiling. "He was murdered because he uncovered financial records proving that Mayor Arthur Vance embezzled millions in city funds and sold our port authority to an international syndicate."

Chaos erupted.

Shouts of shock and outrage bounced off the walls. Reporters frantically pulled out their phones and recording devices, pushing forward past the security barriers.

"Lies! This is a slanderous fabrication!" Mayor Vance shouted, his face turning red with fury as he slammed his champagne glass down onto a nearby table, shattering the crystal. "Guards! Throw them out! Arrest them for disturbing the peace!"

"You can't arrest the truth, Arthur," Adrian said smoothly.

With a flick of his wrist, Adrian pulled the manila folder from his breast pocket and tossed it onto the center table, right in front of a prominent federal judge who had been standing nearby. The thick stack of documents slid across the polished wood, displaying official bank routing numbers, offshore accounts, and signed contracts bearing the mayor's own signature.

The judge picked up the papers, his eyes scanning the lines with mounting horror.

"My God," the judge whispered. "It's all here."
