Chapter 9 - The Promise of Tomorrow

The sun began to dip below the horizon, casting long, golden ribbons of light across the nursery floor. The twins had finally drifted off to sleep, their small chests rising and falling in perfect unison.
Gabriel stood up, offering his hand to Emma.
“Come with me,” he said softly.
“Where?”
“Just outside.”
Curious, Emma placed her hand in his. He led her down the grand marble staircase, past the heavy security gates, and out into the expansive gardens overlooking the Hudson River. The evening air was crisp and sweet with the scent of blooming lilacs.
At the edge of the cliff, where an old stone gazebo stood framed by weeping willows, Gabriel had set up a small, elegant table draped in white linen, illuminated by dozens of flickering candles and soft fairy lights strung through the branches.
In the center of the table rested a beautifully carved wooden box with intricate floral patterns—the kind Emma used to make in her shop in Astoria.
Emma stopped walking, her breath catching in her throat. “Gabriel... what is this?”
Gabriel turned to face her, his expression entirely serious, stripped of all armor, all titles, and all fear.
“When I lost Isabella, I thought my life was over. I thought darkness was the only companion I was ever allowed to have,” Gabriel began, his voice steady and clear. “And then you came into my home. You brought warmth where there was only ice. You loved my children as if they were your own flesh and blood, even while carrying the grief of losing your own little girl.”
Tears welled in Emma’s eyes as she listened, her lower lip trembling slightly.
“Grace will never be forgotten,” Gabriel continued, stepping closer and taking both her hands in his. “Her memory lives in this house, in these children, and in my heart. But Emma... I don't want to live in the shadow of the past anymore. And I don't want you to either.”
He reached down, opened the wooden box on the table, and pulled out a simple, elegant platinum band set with a single, flawless diamond that caught the evening light.
“Will you stay with me, Emma Brooks? Not just as a nurse for my children, not just as a guest in my home... but as my wife, and the mother of our shared tomorrow?”
Emma looked from the ring up into Gabriel’s eyes. She saw no mafia boss, no dangerous syndicate ruler—she saw a man who had chosen love over vengeance, light over darkness, and family over power.

She smiled through her tears, her heart overflowing with a grace she never knew existed.
“Yes, Gabriel,” she whispered. “Yes.”
