Chapter 8 - Healing the House

Three months later, the spring thaw finally reached the Hudson Valley, turning the snow-covered cliffs of the Moretti estate into vibrant fields of green and blossoming dogwood trees.

Inside the grand nursery, Anthony and Lucia were no longer tiny, fragile bundles fighting for every breath. They were healthy, chubby-legged infants of four months old, sitting propped up on colorful play mats, babbling happily as they chased a wooden rattle carved by hand.

Emma sat in the rocking chair by the window, watching them with a soft, content smile. Her chestnut hair was pinned up loosely, and the haunted look in her brown eyes had been replaced by a deep, radiant peace.

The door opened quietly, and Gabriel stepped inside. He had traded his heavy mafia suits for a simple white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, looking less like a feared syndicate boss and more like a man finally learning how to live.

He walked over to the twins, scooped Anthony up into his strong arms, and pressed a kiss to the baby's soft cheek before walking over to Emma.

“They ate all their puréed carrots,” Gabriel reported with a slight smile.

“That’s progress,” Emma laughed softly. “Soon they'll be raiding the pantry.”

Gabriel pulled up a small wooden stool beside her chair, sitting down and resting his elbows on his knees, looking up at her with a warmth that only she had ever been permitted to see.

In the months since Julian’s death, Gabriel had begun the massive, deliberate process of restructuring Moretti Holdings—transitioning its remaining assets entirely into legitimate commercial real estate, shipping logistics, and charitable foundations bearing Isabella’s name. The old world of blood and shadows was being systematically dismantled, brick by brick.

“Clare called from the Astoria shop this morning,” Gabriel said gently. “She said the new spring inventory of wooden toys and custom quilts is selling out faster than she can stock them.”

Emma smiled, her heart swelling. “She’s thinking of expanding the shop. Taking over the storefront next door.”

“Tell her I'll finance the expansion,” Gabriel said instantly.

“Gabriel, no. She wants to do it on her own, you know that.”

Gabriel chuckled, reaching out to gently touch a strand of hair that had fallen across Emma’s cheek. His fingers lingered there, warm and tender.

“You know, Emma... when you walked into that hospital room three months ago, I thought you were just a coincidence. A miracle of biology come to save my children.”

May you like

Emma looked down into his dark, steady eyes. “And now?”

“Now,” Gabriel whispered, his voice thick with emotion, “I realize you didn't just save my children. You saved my soul.”
