Chapter 2 - The Sanctuary of Milk and Memory

Emma Brooks felt the weight of Gabriel Moretti’s gaze before she even looked up. He was towering, imposing, and radiated an aura of dangerous authority that made the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. Even in his grief, there was an apex-predator stillness about him.
“Who is she?” Gabriel’s voice was a low, gravelly baritone that vibrated in the sterile hallway.
“Her name is Emma Brooks, Mr. Moretti,” Nurse Margaret said, stepping slightly in front of Emma as if to shield her from the billionaire's intensity. “She lost her baby girl three weeks ago on this very floor. Her body... her body is still producing milk. She heard your twins crying.”
Gabriel stared at Emma. He saw the dark circles under her gentle brown eyes, the slight tremor in her hands, and the unmistakable dark dampness staining the front of her pale gown. He had investigated enemies, interrogated traitors, and weighed the souls of men with a single glance, but looking at Emma, he saw only raw, unadulterated agony mirroring his own.
“You lost your child?” Gabriel asked, his voice losing a fraction of its razor-sharp edge.
“Her name was Grace,” Emma whispered, her voice steady despite her trembling hands. “I held her for an hour after she passed. My body doesn't understand that she's gone. Every time I wake up, I feel like she's waiting for me to feed her.”
Gabriel looked past Emma toward the open door of the neonatal suite, where the faint, exhausted cries of Anthony and Lucia drifted out.
“They won't take the bottles,” Gabriel said, the confession tasting like ash in his mouth. “The doctors say they're fading. If you... if you can help them, name your price. Money, property, whatever you want.”
Emma’s chin rose, a flash of quiet pride replacing her sorrow.
“I don't want your money, Mr. Moretti. I lost a daughter. I know what it feels like to watch a child slip away while you stand there helpless. If your babies are starving, let me try. Not for a price. Just... let me hold them.”
Gabriel stared at her for a long, silent moment. In his world, everyone had a price—loyalty was rented, and favors were debts. For someone to offer pure, unselfish mercy without asking for a single cent was foreign to him.
“Go,” Gabriel said, stepping aside and opening the door wider.
Emma walked into the NICU suite. The air was warm, smelling of antiseptic and ozone. She washed her hands meticulously at the sink, her heart hammering against her ribs. Nurse Margaret gently lifted the tiny, shivering form of baby Lucia and placed her in Emma’s arms.
Lucia was impossibly light, like holding a bundle of feathers wrapped in silk. Her little face was crumpled in distress, her tiny mouth gasping for air.
Emma sat down in the rocking chair in the corner of the room, unbuttoned the top of her nightgown, and brought Lucia close to her chest. She didn't force the baby. Instead, she began to hum a soft, wandering lullaby she had made up for Grace.
“Hush now, little star, the night is long, but love is strong...”
At the sound of her voice, Lucia’s frantic movements paused. The baby’s cheek brushed against Emma’s warm skin. Instinct took over—an ancient, biological dialogue between mother and child. Lucia rooted blindly for a second, found what she had been searching for, and latched on with a sudden, desperate strength.
Emma closed her eyes as a sharp, sweet pang shot through her chest. She let out a soft sigh of relief as Lucia began to swallow, rhythmic and deep.
In the doorway, Gabriel watched, his breath caught in his throat. For the first time in three days, the crying stopped.
Anthony, still in his incubator, seemed to sense his sister's calm. His breathing regulated, and his tiny fists relaxed.

Gabriel turned to Margaret, his voice thick. “Get her whatever she needs. Secure this entire wing. Nobody enters or leaves without my direct order.”
He didn't know it yet, but by bringing Emma Brooks into his children's lives, he had invited the only person capable of healing his shattered household—and placed her directly in the crosshairs of the traitor living under his own roof.
