Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Ledger

The Moretti estate was a labyrinth of hidden passages, ancient mahogany furniture, and modern security hubs. While Emma spent her days nursing the twins and turning the expansive nursery into a warm haven of handmade blankets and soft mobiles, the dark machinery of the syndicate continued to turn beneath her feet.

Late one evening, after the twins had finally drifted into a deep sleep, Emma slipped downstairs to the grand kitchen to warm a cup of chamomile tea. The sprawling marble-and-steel kitchen was silent, save for the hum of the refrigerator.

As she waited for the kettle, a muffled voice drifted from the adjacent study, where heavy oak doors remained slightly ajar.

It was Julian’s voice, speaking in a harsh, urgent whisper over a secure phone line.

“...I'm telling you, the shipment from the docks in Newark was short by four containers,” Julian hissed. “Gabriel is sniffing around the logistics manifests. If he audits the real estate holdings in Queens, he’s going to find the shell company we used to siphon the port revenues.”

Emma froze, the mug slipping slightly in her hand. She pressed her back against the pantry wall, barely daring to breathe.

“I don't care how you do it, just clean the books before the end of the quarter,” Julian continued on the call. “And as for the hospital records from Isabella’s delivery—make sure Dr. Adler stays quiet. A grieving widower is dangerous enough; if Gabriel finds out his wife's hemorrhage wasn't natural, he won't stop until he tears this entire organization apart, starting with me.”

Emma’s blood turned to ice water.

Wasn't natural?

Isabella’s death—the sudden, catastrophic blood loss, the rapid failure to clot—wasn't just a tragic complication of childbirth? It was murder? And Julian was the one behind it?

Before Emma could process the revelation, a heavy hand gripped her shoulder from behind.

She let out a sharp gasp, dropping her mug to the marble floor, where it shattered into a hundred jagged pieces.

“What are you doing down here, Emma?”

Gabriel’s voice was right against her ear, warm and deep, but his grip was firm. He looked down at the broken ceramic, then up at her wide, terrified brown eyes.

In the study, the phone call abruptly clicked dead.

Heavy footsteps approached the door, and Julian stepped into the kitchen, buttoning his vest, wearing his trademark disarming smile.

“Well, well. Late-night snack cravings?” Julian asked smoothly, glancing from the broken mug to Emma’s pale, trembling face. “Or were you listening to a private conversation, Mrs. Brooks?”

Gabriel stepped in front of Emma, his body forming an absolute barrier between her and his cousin. His eyes narrowed into slits of pure, lethal ice as he stared at Julian.

“Get out of my sight, Julian,” Gabriel said, each word enunciated with terrifying clarity.

Julian raised his hands in mock surrender, casting one last lingering, chilling look at Emma before turning back toward his quarters.

Gabriel turned back to Emma, his expression softening as he saw the terror written across her face. He knelt down, picking up a piece of the broken ceramic.

“Are you hurt?” he asked softly.

Emma looked down at the man who commanded armies of killers, the man who had promised to protect her and his children. She knew that if she told him what she had heard—that his own cousin had murdered his wife—Gabriel would unleash a war that would burn New York to the ground.

She swallowed hard, her heart pounding against her ribs, and made a decision that would change the course of both their lives forever.

“I just... I heard a noise, Gabriel,” she lied, her voice trembling. “I got scared.”

May you like

Gabriel stood up, searching her eyes for a long moment before nodding slowly. He reached out, gently wiping a stray tear from her cheek.

“You're safe here, Emma,” he promised. “I swear to you, nobody will ever touch you or the babies as long as I breathe.”
