Chapter 7 - The Confession in the Vault

When the armored SUV screeched to a halt in front of the Moretti estate, Gabriel was already waiting on the front steps, his face dark as a thundercloud, his heavy wool coat billowing in the bitter winter wind.
Before the vehicle had even come to a complete stop, Gabriel ripped the rear door open. His dark eyes scanned Emma from head to toe, searching for blood, for injury, for any sign that he had failed to keep her safe.
“Are you hurt?” Gabriel demanded, his voice thick with a rage so intense it felt radioactive.
“I'm fine, Gabriel,” Emma said, stepping out of the SUV and standing before him on the snow-dusted stone. “Viktor got me out in time.”
Gabriel grabbed her by the shoulders, pulling her close against his chest as if to convince himself she was real. Then he turned his lethal gaze onto Viktor.
“Find out who leaked her location,” Gabriel commanded. “Every phone, every security log, every guard. Tear the house apart until you find the rat.”
“It won't take a search, Gabriel,” Emma said softly, pulling back from his embrace and looking him straight in the eye. “I know who leaked it.”
Gabriel froze. The entire security detail standing around the courtyard went dead silent.
“Who?” Gabriel asked, his voice dropping into a terrifying whisper.
“Your cousin. Julian.”
Julian stepped out from the shadows of the portico just then, flanked by two of his own personal bodyguards, holding a silver-plated cigarette case in his hand with an infuriatingly calm smile.
“Oh, Emma,” Julian sighed, shaking his head. “Such a vivid imagination for a woman who knits blankets for a living. Accusing family without proof? That’s a dangerous game.”
Gabriel spun around, his eyes locking onto his cousin. The air between the two men grew heavy, charged with years of shared blood, family loyalty, and now, ultimate betrayal.
“Is this true, Julian?” Gabriel asked, his voice shaking with a fury that could no longer be contained.
Julian chuckled, snapping the cigarette case shut. “Gabe, think about it. You've gone soft. Ever since Isabella died, you've been distracted by two mewling babies and some random craft shop woman from Astoria. You let the port revenues slip. You ignored the real estate syndication in Queens. Someone has to keep this family afloat.”
“You killed Isabella,” Gabriel stated flatly, not as a question, but as a mathematical certainty.
Julian’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, replaced by a cold, arrogant sneer. “She was weak, Gabe. She wanted you to step away from the syndicate, to go legitimate, to sell off our assets. If she had lived, she would have destroyed everything our grandfather built. So I had Dr. Adler alter her postpartum medication. A simple anticoagulant shift. Clean, untraceable... until this little milkmaid happened to be standing outside the study door listening.”
Gabriel didn't yell. He didn't curse.
He drew a heavy, suppressed pistol from his shoulder holster with terrifying speed and fired twice.
Thud. Thud.
Julian’s body crumpled onto the pristine white snow, staining it dark crimson. His bodyguards didn't even have time to draw their weapons before Viktor and the rest of the Moretti security detail neutralized them in a hail of disciplined gunfire.
The courtyard fell utterly silent once more.
Gabriel stood over his cousin’s body, the gun still smoking slightly in his hand. He closed his eyes, taking a long, shaky breath as the weight of years of deception and grief finally fractured inside him.
Emma walked slowly toward him, ignoring the bodies on the snow, and gently placed her hand over the hand holding the weapon.

Gabriel looked down at her, his dark eyes shimmering with unshed tears.
“It's over,” Emma whispered. “You can finally put the ghosts to rest.”
