Chapter 8 - A Christmas of Warmth

The winter brought a heavy blanket of snow to Westchester, turning the estate into a picturesque winter wonderland. For the first time in five years, a massive, twenty-foot pine tree stood proud in the grand foyer, decorated with thousands of twinkling white lights, glittering ornaments, and handmade paper chains crafted by Elena.
It was Christmas Eve. The fire in the great hearth was roaring, crackling merrily and casting a golden glow over the room.
Elena was practically vibrating with excitement, wearing a festive red sweater and running around the tree. "Do you think Santa will find the big house, Mr. Daniel?"
"Oh, absolutely," Daniel laughed, lifting her up onto his shoulders so she could place a glittering silver star right at the very top of the tree. "I sent him our exact GPS coordinates. He won't miss it."
Maria walked in carrying a plate of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies and two mugs of hot cocoa. She stopped, watching Daniel laugh as Elena pulled playfully at his hair. A deep, profound sense of peace settled in her chest. A year ago, she had been shivering in a cold cottage, terrified of losing everything. Now, she was surrounded by absolute safety and love.
That night, after Elena had finally drifted off to sleep dreaming of sugarplums, Daniel and Maria sat by the fireplace, watching the embers glow.
"I have a gift for you," Daniel said quietly, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small, velvet box.
Maria’s breath caught. She opened it to find a stunning, delicate gold bracelet adorned with a small, sapphire charm—the exact color of the custom shirt Elena had tried to wash all those months ago.
"Daniel, it's beautiful," she whispered.
"It's a reminder," Daniel said, taking her hand in his. His eyes were steady, filled with a deep, mature affection. "A reminder of the day my life truly began. I love you, Maria. I love the family we've built here. And if you'll have me, I want to make this family official."
May you like
Maria stared at him, her heart overflowing. She didn't need a grand, sweeping corporate speech. She just looked into the eyes of the man who had become her protector, her partner, and her best friend.
"Yes, Daniel," she whispered, leaning forward to kiss him as the snow fell softly outside the window. "A thousand times, yes."
