Chapter 7 - The Light in the Gardens

Six months passed, and the Westchester estate underwent a complete transformation. The silent, imposing fortress was now a home filled with music, toys, and life.

Daniel had restructured his corporate life completely. He no longer took late-night flights or spent weekends in sterile boardrooms. He delegated tasks to his executives, realizing that the company could survive without his constant, anxious oversight. He was home every day by 5:00 PM.

The six gardeners who used to work in silence now had a tiny assistant. Elena, equipped with her own pink plastic watering can and a pair of oversized gardening gloves, followed them around the sprawling lawns.

Daniel stood on the back patio, a cup of coffee in hand, watching Elena chase a butterfly across the grass. Maria stepped out beside him, wearing a sharp, professional blazer—she had just returned from a foundation meeting in the city.

"She's growing so fast," Maria said softly, a peaceful smile on her face.

"Too fast," Daniel agreed, taking a sip of his coffee. "She told me this morning that she wants to learn how to play the piano."

"Oh boy," Maria laughed. "The house is about to get a lot louder."

"Good," Daniel said, turning to look at Maria. Over the past few months, their bond had deepened into something profound. It wasn't just professional, and it wasn't just a landlord-tenant dynamic anymore. They had become each other's anchor. Daniel found himself looking forward to Maria’s laugh, her sharp insights at the foundation, and the quiet moments they shared after Elena went to bed.

"Maria," Daniel said, his tone turning gentle. "I was thinking... my mother’s old grand piano in the parlor hasn't been tuned in years. I've called a specialist to come look at it tomorrow. I want Elena to have the best teacher we can find."

Maria looked up at him, her eyes reflecting the warm evening sun. "You do so much for her, Daniel. For both of us."

"You gave this house its soul back," Daniel said, his voice dropping to a soft, earnest whisper. "You gave me my life back. I should be thanking you every single day."
