Chapter 2 - The Cottage in the Shadows

Daniel squeezed his eyes shut, the cold water from the floor soaking through his tailored trousers, but he didn't care. For years, he had insulated himself with iron-clad schedules, cold corporate language, and millions of dollars, believing that numbness was a shield against the pain of losing his parents. Yet, a tiny girl with damp curls and a desperate heart had shattered that shield with a single sentence.

He breathed out a ragged sigh, wiping his eyes before looking back down at Elena. Her brown eyes were still wide, filled with an innocent, anxious curiosity.

"Yes, Elena," Daniel said, his voice husky but firm. "You did a very good job. But you don't ever have to wash my clothes again. Do you understand?"

Elena blinked, her little lips parting. "No wash? But... Mommy say big house must be clean."

"I will find someone else to clean it," Daniel said gently, standing up and reaching down to lift her. She was so light—frighteningly light—like a bird. He held her against his chest, completely unbothered by the wet soap and water soaking into his expensive suit jacket. "Right now, we need to take care of your mommy."

Carrying the toddler, Daniel strode out of the main house and into the crisp evening air. The stone pathway leading to the rear cottage was dark, illuminated only by the faint, warm glow from the cottage's small kitchen window. As he walked, Elena wrapped her small, damp arms around his neck. She smelled like cheap lavender dish soap and baby powder. It was an achingly human scent that his sterile mansion had lacked for half a decade.

He pushed open the door to the cottage. It was unlocked.

Inside, the air was heavy and warm, smelling of eucalyptus and old tea. The living room was neat but worn, featuring a faded floral sofa and a small table with a coloring book sprawled open.

"Mommy in there," Elena whispered, pointing a small finger toward the bedroom.

Daniel walked in. Maria Torres lay beneath a pile of heavy blankets, her face flushed a dark, dangerous crimson. Her breathing was shallow, ragged, and punctuated by a harsh, rattling cough. Even in her deep, feverish sleep, her brow was furrowed in anxiety.

Daniel set Elena down on the edge of the bed and pressed the back of his hand to Maria’s forehead. She was burning hot.

"Maria," he called out softly, shaking her shoulder. "Maria, can you hear me?"

The housekeeper’s eyelids fluttered open, glassy and unfocused. When her vision finally locked onto Daniel’s face, absolute terror washed over her. She tried to bolt upright, coughing violently, her hands trembling as she pulled the blanket to her chin.

"Mr. Daniel!" she gasped, her voice raw and cracked. "I... I am so sorry. I didn’t know you were coming back. I’ll get up right now. The kitchen... the dust... I’ll take care of it."

"Maria, stop," Daniel commanded, his voice catching. He placed a hand on her shoulder, gently forcing her back onto the pillows. "Don't move. You're incredibly sick."

"Please," she wept, tears springing instantly to her eyes, matching the terror Elena had shown earlier. "Please don't fire me. If I lose this house, I have nowhere to take Elena. I just needed a day or two. I’ll work through the night, I swear—"

"Maria, look at me," Daniel said, his own eyes refilling with tears. "Look at me. You are not losing your job. You are not losing this house. I am so sorry I made you feel like you had to hide this."

Maria stared at him, stunned into silence by the sight of her billionaire employer—the man who had spent five years acting like a ghost in his own home—kneeling by her bed with tear-stained cheeks.

Daniel pulled out his phone and dialed a number he hadn't used in a long time: his family's private physician. "Dr. Evans? It’s Daniel Cole. I need you at the Westchester estate immediately. Bring a medical team. It's an emergency."
