Chapter 5 - The Master and the Caregiver

On the third day, Maria’s fever broke completely. She awoke to the sound of soft laughter coming from the hallway.
When she sat up, she felt stronger than she had in weeks. The IV had been removed, replaced by a simple vitamin patch. The door to her room opened, and Daniel walked in, carrying a tray filled with chicken soup, fresh bread, and hot tea. Behind him, Elena came bounding in, wearing a brand-new yellow sundress and holding her giant teddy bear.
"Mommy!" Elena squealed, scrambling up onto the bed and throwing her arms around Maria’s neck.
Maria held her tightly, tears of relief leaking from her eyes. She looked up at Daniel, who placed the tray gently on her lap.
"Mr. Daniel... I don't know how to thank you," Maria whispered, her voice trembling. "The nurse told me everything you did. Moving us here, the doctors, the clothes for Elena... I can't afford to pay you back for all of this."
Daniel sat on the edge of the bed, his expression incredibly soft. "Maria, look at me. You will never talk about paying me back. If anything, I owe you an apology. You have worked for my family for over a decade. You knew my parents. You knew me when I was a kid. And yet, I let myself become so cold and distant that you were terrified of losing your livelihood just because you got sick."
He reached out, placing his hand over hers.
"The fault is entirely mine," Daniel continued, his voice thick with emotion. "I lost my way after my parents died. I buried myself in work and forgot how to be a human being. Your daughter... Elena... she saved me from that. She taught me what actually matters."

Maria wiped her eyes, looking at her boss with a profound sense of awe. "You're a good man, Daniel. Your mother always said you had the biggest heart, even if you hid it behind big walls."
"Well, the walls are down," Daniel smiled, looking at Elena, who was currently trying to feed her teddy bear a spoonful of soup. "And they're staying down."
