Chapter 4 - The Breaking of the Silence

Daniel didn't sleep that night. He stayed up, sitting in an armchair positioned right between Maria’s recovery room and the adjacent bedroom where Elena lay fast asleep, wrapped in his oversized t-shirt and buried beneath a mountain of goose-down duvets.
Every hour, he checked on Maria, watching the monitors stabilize. Every hour, he peeked in on Elena, ensuring she hadn't kicked off her blankets.
As the sun began to rise, casting long streaks of amber and pink light through the floor-to-ceiling windows, Daniel looked at his phone. He had eighty-seven unread emails. Three missed calls from his chief financial officer regarding a multi-million-dollar acquisition in London. A text from his secretary reminding him of a board meeting at 9:00 AM.
He opened his laptop and drafted a single email to his executive board:
I am taking an indefinite leave of absence effective immediately. Cancel all my appointments for the next two weeks. Do not call unless the company is physically on fire.
He slammed the laptop shut. For the first time in his life, he didn't care about the market opening. He didn't care about profit margins or shareholder expectations.
Around 8:00 AM, Elena woke up. She patted out of her room, the white shirt dragging along the hardwood floor, rubbing her eyes. "Mr. Daniel?"
"Good morning, Elena," Daniel said, lifting her into his arms. "Did you sleep well?"
"Yes. Is Mommy awake?"
"Not yet. The doctor gave her some medicine that helps her sleep so her body can fight the sickness. Want to go check on her quietly?"
They tiptoed into Maria’s room. Her color was vastly improved, her skin no longer burning, and her breathing was deep and rhythmic. Daniel let Elena kiss her mother’s hand before they tiptoed back out.
"Now," Daniel said, walking down the grand staircase. "I think we need to go shopping. You can't wear my shirts forever, can you?"
Elena looked down at herself and giggled. "It's too big!"

That morning, Daniel’s sleek, black executive SUV parked in front of a local boutique toy and children’s clothing store in Westchester. The store owner nearly fainted when Daniel Cole walked in. Over the next hour, Daniel didn't look at a single price tag. He picked out soft sweaters, leggings, dresses, shoes, and a massive, fluffy teddy bear that Elena instantly claimed as her best friend, naming him "Mr. Bear."
When they returned to the estate, the foyer was piled high with colorful shopping bags. For the first time since his parents' deaths, the house didn't feel like a museum. It felt chaotic, messy, and intensely alive.
