Chapter 8 - Healing Old Wounds

Three months later.
Spring had arrived in Baltimore. The cold rains of winter gave way to warm sunlight blooming across the gardens of the Roland Park estate.
Julian Mercer and Mrs. Vance were facing life sentences for corporate embezzlement, conspiracy to commit murder, and attempted child endangerment. With the corruption thoroughly purged from Mercer Harborline, Dominic transformed the company, establishing a massive philanthropic foundation in Elena’s honor to fund pediatric care and support low-income single mothers across Maryland.
At the estate, life had transformed entirely.
The once gloomy, quiet stone mansion was now filled with laughter. Little Emma was thriving at a top private school, happily taking on the role of an overly protective big sister to baby Caleb, who was now healthy, chubby-cheeked, and constantly giggling.
One afternoon, Claire stood in the sunlit garden, watching Emma teach Caleb how to roll a red rubber ball across the grass. She smiled, feeling a sense of peace she had never known in her entire life.
Dominic walked out onto the patio, holding two cups of coffee. He wore a simple sweater instead of his usual intimidating dark suits. The sharp, hardened lines of his face had softened, replaced by a quiet contentment.
He handed a cup to Claire, standing beside her as they watched the children play.
“Dr. Ross gave Caleb a clean bill of health this morning,” Dominic said, his voice warm. “He’s gaining weight, hitting all his milestones. He’s completely healthy.”

“I told you he was a fighter,” Claire said with a soft smile.
Dominic turned to look at her, his expression growing sincere and deep. “He’s a fighter because he had someone fight for him when no one else knew how to listen.”
