Chapter 5 - Unmasking the Betrayer

Late that night, after the children were asleep, Claire met Dominic in his private study. Rain beat a steady rhythm against the glass as she placed Elena’s journal and the encrypted USB drive onto his desk.

“I found these under Caleb’s crib,” Claire said gently. “Elena hid them where only someone caring for the baby would look.”

Dominic’s hands trembled slightly as he plugged the USB drive into his laptop. A series of financial spreadsheets and audio recordings appeared on the screen.

The first recording played. Elena’s voice filled the quiet room, clear and trembling with fear:

“Dominic, if you’re listening to this, it means I’m gone. Julian and Mrs. Vance have been siphoning millions from the shipping accounts into offshore shell companies in the Caymans. They discovered that father left 60% of the voting shares directly to Caleb upon his birth. Julian knows he will lose control of Mercer Harborline the day Caleb turns eighteen. They are poisoning Caleb’s food slowly, making it look like a genetic illness, so Julian can claim sole guardianship and take control of the empire. Dominic, please... save our baby...”

The recording ended.

Silence fell over the room, heavy and suffocating. Dominic sat frozen, his eyes fixed on the screen as raw grief and monumental rage warred across his features. His late wife hadn't died in a random accident—she had been murdered to cover up a corporate coup, and his innocent son was the final obstacle in Julian’s path.

Dominic slowly buried his face in his hands. A heavy sigh escaped his chest, a sound of profound loss and guilt.

Claire walked over to his side. Without thinking about the boundary between employer and employee, she placed a warm, steady hand on his shoulder.

“You know the truth now, Dominic,” she said softly. “You didn't fail Elena. You are saving Caleb right now. You can finish what she started.”

Dominic looked up at her. His gray eyes met hers, finding an anchor in her unyielding strength. He reached up, placing his hand over hers, holding it firmly.

“I can’t do this alone, Claire,” he whispered, his tough demeanor melting away for a single, honest moment. “I need you.”

“I’m not going anywhere,” Claire promised.
