Chapter 3 - Shadows Over Harborline

The Mercer estate in Roland Park was a fortress of stone, heavy oak, and high iron gates. Rain lashed against the tall stained-glass windows as Dominic’s black SUV pulled into the cobblestone driveway. Claire sat in the back holding Caleb, who slept peacefully in her arms, comforted by the steady warmth of someone who genuinely cared for his well-being.

Once inside the grand parlor, Dr. Ross—Dominic’s trusted personal physician—analyzed the remaining contents of the bottle.

“She’s right, Dominic,” Dr. Ross reported, removing his reading glasses with a solemn shake of his head. “It’s a compound of sodium channel blockers mixed with digitalis extract in microscopic doses. Over time, it causes infant stomach spasms, chronic weakness, and eventually heart failure, mimicking sudden infant death syndrome. If he had kept drinking this for another week...”

Dominic’s fist slammed onto the mahogany desk, cracking the polished varnish. “Elena warned me,” he murmured, his voice thick with raw emotion.

Claire watched him closely. “Elena? Your late wife?”

Dominic walked over to the fireplace, gazing up at a portrait of a beautiful woman with soft blue eyes and a gentle smile. “Elena died eight months ago in a tragic car accident—or so I was led to believe. Three days before she died, she hid a sealed envelope in our safe. It simply said: ‘If anything happens to me, trust no one inside Mercer Harborline. They want Caleb, because Caleb is the true heir to the maritime trust.’ I thought she was delusional from post-partum anxiety. I thought she was paranoid.”

He turned to Claire, a rare vulnerability showing through his hard exterior. “I was wrong. She was trying to protect our boy, and I was too blind to see the snakes in my own house.”

Claire felt a deep pang of empathy. She knew what it was like to fight alone to protect a child. “You’re not blind anymore, Mr. Mercer. But you need to figure out who controls the nursery and who stands to gain if Caleb isn't in the picture.”

Dominic walked toward her, looking down at Caleb resting peacefully in her lap. “My half-brother, Julian, and my estate manager, Mrs. Vance. They are the only ones with unfettered access to the baby’s nursery and our financial trusts.” He paused, looking deep into Claire’s eyes. “I need a nanny I can trust with my life. More importantly, with Caleb’s life. Stay here, Claire. Bring your daughter Emma to live at the estate. I will hire full legal representation to crush your ex-husband’s custody lawsuit overnight, and I will pay you ten times what any agency offers.”

Claire caught her breath. “You’d do that for us?”

“You saved my son tonight,” Dominic said softly. “In my world, loyalty and truth are priceless. Name your terms.”
