Chapter 9 - Real Vows, Real Home

Judge Vance banged his gavel, calling for order as whispers filled the room. He looked over his glasses at Nora Fields.

"Ms. Fields," Judge Vance asked. "What is the Department of Child Services' recommendation following your unannounced visits?"

Nora Fields stood up, opening her file. She looked over at Elaine, then at Lena and Caleb.

"Your Honor," Nora said firmly. "While the origin of Dr. Warren and Nurse Brooks' arrangement was unorthodox, my observations over the past six weeks reveal an exceptionally loving, stable, and thriving environment for Maddie. Dr. Warren has integrated fully into Maddie’s life, and Nurse Brooks’ dedication is unquestionable. The department strongly recommends that permanent guardianship be granted to Lena Brooks."

Elaine stood up in protest, but Judge Vance silenced her with a stern look.

"Petition for transfer of custody to Elaine Porter is denied," Judge Vance declared, bringing the gavel down hard. "Full permanent legal guardianship of Maddie Brooks is hereby awarded to Lena Brooks."

Lena collapsed into tears of overwhelming joy, covering her face. Within seconds, Caleb was by her side, pulling her up into his arms and holding her tight as she wept against his chest.

Three months later, on a crisp autumn Saturday, there were no hospital break rooms, no plastic spoons, and no fake papers.

In a sunlit garden behind St. Catherine’s Chapel, surrounded by white flowers and smiling colleagues—including Tasha, who carried a massive bouquet of yellow roses—Lena stood wearing a lace wedding dress.

Caleb stood before her in a dark tuxedo, holding both of her hands.

"I didn't give you four days' notice this time," Lena whispered with a soft laugh, tears of happiness gleaming in her eyes.

"You didn't need to," Caleb smiled, his voice filled with profound warmth. "I’ve been ready since the moment you asked me in that break room."
