Chapter 6 - Behind Closed Doors

That evening, after Maddie was fast asleep, Lena and Caleb sat together on the small balcony of her apartment, watching the rain trickle down the glass windows. They held matching mugs of chamomile tea.

"Why did you really agree to help me, Caleb?" Lena asked quietly. "I know you said it was to prevent an injustice. But nobody takes on this kind of risk for a co-worker just out of principle."

Caleb stared into his tea, the soft glow of the amber streetlights illuminating his sharp profile.

"When I was nine years old," Caleb began slowly, his voice laced with a long-buried pain, "my younger brother and I were placed into the state foster system after our parents died in an accident. We were separated within two months because no single household wanted to take two grieving boys."

Lena held her breath, listening intently.

"I spent seven years moving between four different homes before I aged out," he continued. "I promised myself when I became a doctor that if I ever had the power to keep a family together, I would never look the other way. When you stood in that break room talking about Maddie, I didn't see a nurse asking for a crazy favor. I saw a sister fighting for her family. I couldn't let you lose."

Lena felt tears spill over her eyelashes. She set her mug down on the small table, reached over, and gently cupped Caleb's cheek with her hand.

"Caleb..." she whispered.

Caleb turned his head slightly, his lips brushing against the palm of her hand. The air between them suddenly grew thick with an undeniable, electric pull. He looked into her eyes, no longer as Dr. Warren the clinical director, but as a man who had fallen deeply, completely in love with the woman beside him.

He leaned in slowly, giving her every opportunity to pull away. Lena didn't. She met him halfway, closing her eyes as his lips touched hers in a sweet, tender kiss that melted away months of fear and pretense.
