Chapter 3 - The Monday Assessment

At 8:45 a.m. on Monday, Lena’s modest two-bedroom apartment smelled faintly of fresh blueberry muffins and lemon disinfectant.

Caleb sat at the small wooden kitchen table wearing a tailored navy sweater and dark jeans—casual enough to look like a loving husband on his day off, yet polished enough to command immediate respect. He was flipping through a deck of flashcards he had made himself overnight, memorizing Maddie’s favorite foods, Lena’s favorite tea, and the exact date they had "met."

Maddie sat across from him, her small hands wrapped around a mug of hot cocoa. She peeked at him over the rim.

"Why are you wearing shoes in the house?" Maddie asked. "Lena says shoes bring in monster dirt."

Caleb stopped flipping his cards, looked down at his leather loafers, and immediately took them off, placing them neatly by the front door. "A valid protocol, Maddie. My apologies."

Maddie giggled. "You talk like a textbook."

"I have been told that," Caleb replied, a rare, faint smile touching the corner of his lips. "Is it an acceptable manner of speech?"

"It’s okay. It makes you sound like a smart dinosaur."

Before Caleb could respond, a firm knock resonated at the front door. Lena took a deep breath, checked her reflection in the hallway mirror—dressed in a soft cream cardigan that made her look rested and stable—and opened the door.

Nora Fields stood on the welcome mat, holding a heavy black clipboard and wearing a sharp gray suit. Her eyes swept over the entryway instantly taking in every detail.

"Good morning, Lena," Nora said, stepping inside. "I hope I'm not early."

"Not at all, Ms. Fields. Please, come in," Lena said warmly. "This is my husband, Caleb Warren."

Caleb stood up smoothly, extending his hand with complete confidence. "Ms. Fields. A pleasure to meet you. Thank you for taking the time to assess our home today."

Nora’s eyes widened slightly as she shook his hand. She clearly recognized his name or at least recognized the authority he carried. "Dr. Warren? Director of Pediatric Services at St. Catherine’s?"

"That is correct," Caleb said seamlessly. "Lena and I kept our relationship private at work for obvious administrative reasons, but given the circumstances regarding Maddie’s official evaluation, we felt it was time to present our full living arrangements."

For the next two hours, Nora conducted a relentless inspection. She checked the pantry, inspected Maddie’s bedroom, reviewed financial statements, and asked probing questions about schedules, childcare backup plans, and domestic responsibilities.

Through it all, Caleb was flawless. He knew that Lena took her tea with honey, that Maddie needed her Stegosaurus spikes (carrots) boiled for exactly seven minutes, and that Lena worked Tuesdays through Fridays while he handled Monday administrative duties.

Nora finally lowered her clipboard, looking genuinely impressed. "I have to admit, Lena, your initial file raised several red flags regarding isolated support. But seeing Dr. Warren here—and seeing how integrated he is in this household—changes the equation significantly."

Lena felt a surge of overwhelming relief. But Nora wasn't finished.

"I will recommend extending your temporary custody," Nora announced. "However, given the sudden appearance of this marriage in our records, I will schedule an unannounced follow-up visit in six weeks before finalizing permanent guardianship."
