Chapter 8 - Truth on the Stand

The courtroom was cold and formal. Elaine sat on the opposite side with her high-priced attorney, looking triumphant. Social worker Nora Fields was seated in the back, clipboard in hand, looking solemn.
When Judge Harold Vance called Caleb to the witness stand, the room went dead silent.
Elaine’s lawyer stood up, smiling smugly. "Dr. Warren, isn't it true that four weeks ago, you and Nurse Lena Brooks were nothing more than casual hospital colleagues?"
"That is correct," Caleb replied smoothly.
"And isn't it true that Nurse Brooks approached you in a break room asking you to pretend to be her husband specifically to fool social services?"
Lena lowered her head, squeezing her fists tightly under the table.
"Yes, she did," Caleb answered clearly.
A quiet gasp rippled through the gallery. Elaine smiled.
"So you admit it was a sham!" the attorney declared triumphantly. "A fake marriage designed to deceive the court!"
"It started as a proposition out of sheer desperation," Caleb said, his voice ringing with power and clarity, silencing the courtroom instantly. "Lena was facing a cold, bureaucratic system that judged her capabilities based on bank statements rather than her fierce, unwavering devotion to her sister. She asked me because she had nowhere else to turn."
Caleb turned his eyes directly to Judge Vance.
"Your Honor, I agreed to help her because I believed the system was about to make a terrible mistake. But what began as an agreement to protect a child became something I never anticipated. Over the last several weeks, I have watched Lena sacrifice her comfort, her rest, and her pride every single day for Maddie. I have fallen deeply in love with Lena Brooks. And I have grown to love Maddie as if she were my own daughter."

Caleb stood up from the witness chair, looking directly at Lena.
"If this court decides that our beginning was flawed, then punish me. But do not take a child away from the only person who has ever loved her with every fiber of her soul."
