Chapter 10 - Forever After Monday
The reception took place in a warm, timber-framed hall near the lake. Music played gently as guests laughed, ate, and celebrated.
At the head table, eight-year-old Maddie stood up on a wooden chair, holding a microphone in both hands. She was wearing a dusty-rose flower girl dress and a plastic dinosaur tiara.
"Hello everybody!" Maddie announced into the microphone, making the room quiet down. "I want to make a speech!"
Caleb and Lena looked at each other, smiling warmly as they held hands under the table.
"When Lena told me Dr. Caleb was coming to live with us, I thought he was just a serious doctor who talked like a dinosaur textbook," Maddie said, prompting laughter from the audience. "But then he learned how to make real T-Rex roars. And he helped my sister stop crying at night. And he buys the good carrots that look like Stegosaurus spikes."
Maddie looked directly at Caleb with bright, happy eyes.
"Thank you for being my extra-special brother-in-law and my forever family, Caleb. You're the best miracle we ever got on a Monday."
The room erupted into applause and emotional cheers. Caleb swallowed hard, his eyes glistening with rare emotion as he gave Maddie a loving nod.
Later that evening, as the stars filled the clear night sky, Caleb and Lena stepped out onto the quiet wooden pier overlooking the lake. The distant sound of music drifted across the water.
Caleb wrapped his arms around Lena from behind, pulling her close against his chest to shield her from the cool night breeze.
"Are you happy, Mrs. Warren?" he whispered into her hair.
Lena leaned back against him, closing her eyes and breathing in the scent of cedar and pine. The crushing weight of fear, debt, and loneliness that had burdened her for years was entirely gone, replaced by an abiding peace.

"I’m more than happy," Lena murmured, turning in his arms to wrap her hands around his neck. "I asked you for a fake husband by Monday, Caleb... and I ended up getting the love of my life forever."
Caleb leaned down, kissing her deeply under the starlight, knowing that whatever Mondays lay ahead, they would face them together as a family.
