Chapter 4 - Living the Lie

The six-week follow-up condition meant one thing: Caleb couldn't just walk away after Monday morning. The lie needed to stay alive.

To keep up appearances for neighbors, the social worker, and hospital staff who might catch wind of the news, Caleb established a regular presence at Lena’s apartment. Three nights a week, he would bring his briefcase, sit at the small dining table to work on hospital budgets, and share dinner with Lena and Maddie.

At first, the arrangement was strictly clinical. Caleb was quiet, disciplined, and rigid. But children have a way of dissolving rigidity.

One Thursday evening, Lena walked into the living room after washing the dinner dishes and stopped dead in her tracks.

Caleb was sitting cross-legged on the rug, his expensive tie tossed onto the couch, holding a plastic Tyrannosaurus Rex in one hand and a Diplodocus in the other. Maddie was instructing him on proper prehistoric sound effects.

"No, Dr. Caleb," Maddie scolded gently, tapping his knee. "T-Rex doesn't go 'Roar' like a lion. He goes GRAAARRR from deep in his tummy!"

Caleb cleared his throat, adjusted his posture, and gave a surprisingly deep, chest-rumbling GRAAARRR.

Maddie clapped her hands in delight. "Yes! Just like that!"

Lena leaned against the doorframe, her throat tightening. For months, she had carried the crushing weight of being Maddie’s only protector. Seeing this brilliant, formidable doctor sitting on her worn rug making dinosaur sounds for a little girl made something shift deep inside her chest.

Caleb caught her looking and blushed slightly, standing up and smoothing his trousers. "We were... analyzing late Cretaceous vocalizations."

"I see that," Lena said, smiling warmly. "You're a natural, Dr. Warren."

"It’s simple acoustics, Nurse Brooks," he murmured, but he couldn't hide the soft warmth in his eyes.
