Chapter 8 - Dawn Over Manhattan

By sunrise, the storm had cleared, leaving a crisp, brilliant October morning in its wake. The sky over Manhattan was a vast, unbroken expanse of sapphire blue, and sunlight washed over the glass facade of the Blackthorne Tower.
Inside the penthouse suite, Maya sat cross-legged on the plush living room rug, happily devouring a stack of chocolate-chip pancakes prepared by the executive chef, while watching cartoons on the giant wall-mounted screen.
Hannah stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, holding a cup of hot black coffee, watching the bustling traffic across the East River.
Footsteps approached softly behind her, and a warm wool blanket was draped over her shoulders. Julian wrapped his arms around her waist, resting his chin comfortably on her shoulder.
"The morning papers are out," Julian murmured against her neck. "The board unanimously ratified my interim restructuring plan. Conrad has been formally stripped of all executive titles and is facing federal indictments for securities fraud and conspiracy."
Hannah leaned back into his embrace, letting out a long sigh of relief. "And the foundation?"
"The Mercer-Blackthorne Foundation for Family Advocacy is fully funded and operational as of six a.m.," Julian replied, turning her gently in his arms so she was facing him. "It's dedicated to helping mothers and children who were victims of corporate intimidation and illegal surveillance. You'll be chairing the board of directors, if you're willing."
Hannah looked up into his gray eyes, seeing the genuine remorse, devotion, and love that had been hidden away for seven long years.
"I think I'd like that," she whispered with a small, radiant smile. "On one condition."
"Name it. Anything."

"No more bodyguards inside the kitchen when I'm making breakfast."
Julian laughed—a deep, resonant sound that seemed to chase away the last lingering shadows of the past. "Deal."
