Chapter 3 - The Midnight Boardroom

The thunderstorm outside the Blackthorne Tower lashed against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the executive boardroom on the eightieth floor. Lightning illuminated the Manhattan skyline, casting erratic, harsh shadows across the mahogany conference table where twelve senior board members sat in tense, anxious silence.
Julian sat at the head of the table. To his right sat Hannah, holding Maya—who had fallen asleep wrapped in Julian's heavy wool overcoat. Sloane and Conrad sat at the far end, isolated, stripped of their corporate badges and barred from contacting outside legal counsel.
Marcus, the senior vice president of operations, clicked his remote, projecting Victor Blackthorne’s full, unedited video confession onto the smart-board screen. The footage detailed financial embezzlement, corporate sabotage, and the deliberate coercion used against Hannah Mercer in 2019.
When the screen went dark, absolute silence gripped the room.
"The allegations are severe," murmured Thomas Sterling, the oldest board member, adjusting his glasses. "If this leak reaches the federal prosecutors, the Department of Justice will initiate a RICO investigation against our primary subsidiaries."
"It won't reach prosecutors through the media because we are going to preempt them," Julian stated, his voice ringing with absolute authority. He placed a thick dossier in front of each board member. "Inside those folders, you will find Arthur Bell's audit logs, proving that Sloane and Conrad systematically diverted corporate funds to finance illegal surveillance operations against private citizens—including Hannah Mercer."
Conrad slammed his hands on the table, standing up abruptly. "You have no right! The board voted to give us executive authority last year. You're staging a coup!"
"I am exercising my veto power as primary heir and CEO," Julian countered, locking eyes with his brother. "Furthermore, my legal team has already filed injunctions freezing your personal assets, Conrad. You are officially suspended pending a criminal referral."
Sloane remained seated, staring blankly at the polished wood of the table. Her legal empire, built over fifteen years of ruthless calculation, had crumbled in less than six hours. She looked up at Julian, her voice devoid of its usual sharp edge.
"You think you've won, Julian? You think bringing her back and playing the devoted father cleans your hands? The Blackthorne name is built on blood and compromises you can't even fathom. You can't wash away what this family is."
Julian leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table. "I may not be able to erase the past, Sloane, but I can damn well decide the future. And you won't be a part of it."
He signaled to two private security officers stationed by the doors. "Escort Ms. Avery and Mr. Blackthorne from the building. Ensure all their electronic devices are surrendered for forensic analysis."
As Conrad was dragged out, shouting obscenities, and Sloane walked out with head held high in bitter defeat, the heavy oak doors clicked shut.

Julian turned his attention back to the remaining board members. "The meeting is adjourned. Tomorrow morning at nine, we issue a public restructuring statement, and I will personally announce the creation of the Mercer-Blackthorne Foundation for displaced families."
The board members hurried out, eager to distance themselves from the sinking ship of Conrad's faction. Within minutes, the vast boardroom was empty, save for Marcus, Hannah, Maya, and Julian.
