Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Penthouse

The private elevator chimed softly as it reached the penthouse suite. The vast, minimalist apartment was bathed in the amber glow of city lights reflecting off the wet pavement far below.

Hannah carried Maya toward the master guest suite, where the child’s breathing remained deep and even, completely oblivious to the tectonic shifts happening around her family. Julian followed them quietly, carrying the purple backpack and his heavy coat.

When Hannah tucked Maya into the plush goose-down bed, she pulled the blanket up to the child's chin and stood up, letting out a long, shuddering breath. The adrenaline that had sustained her through the bomb threat, the rain, and the confrontation at Belladonna’s was finally wearing off, leaving a profound, bone-deep exhaustion in its wake.

She turned to find Julian standing in the doorway, watching her with an intensity that made her skin tingle.

"You should get some rest," Julian said softly, stepping into the room. "The guest rooms are secure. My personal detail is stationed outside in the hallway."

Hannah crossed her arms defensively, retreating a step toward the window. "I don't need your protection, Julian. I need to know what happens next. Do you plan to keep us here like prisoners in a gilded cage, just like your father did?"

Julian stopped, wounded by the comparison. He held up his hands in a placating gesture. "Hannah, look at me. When Arthur brought me the initial reports this morning—before he passed away—he told me I had made the biggest mistake of my life seven years ago by letting you walk out of that hospital."

"Your lawyers made that decision for you," Hannah snapped, tears finally threatening to spill over her lashes. "And you didn't look very hard for me, did you? You accepted their story because it was easier than fighting your family."

Julian closed the distance between them, stopping just inches away. The scent of rain and cedar drifted from him, instantly transporting her back to the brief, perfect months they had shared before the Blackthorne machine crushed them.

"I believed them because they told me you took a settlement and ran with another man," Julian whispered, his voice cracking with raw emotion. "They showed me bank records, signed statements, medical receipts... all forged by Sloane. I spent seven years believing you never loved me."

"And you never thought to call? To check?"

"They told me you threatened a restraining order if I ever contacted you again," Julian said, his gray eyes searching her face for any sign of forgiveness. "They weaponized my respect for your boundaries against us both. But the moment I saw Maya tonight—the moment I looked into her eyes—I knew every word they told me was a lie."

Hannah looked away, fighting the warmth threatening to thaw her defenses. "It changes nothing about how dangerous your world is, Julian. Look what happened tonight. Someone planted a bomb threat just to lure us out or silence us."

"And that is why you aren't leaving," Julian said firmly. "Not because you're a prisoner, but because I won't let you out of my sight until I root out every last loyalist of Conrad and Sloane in this city."

Before Hannah could retort, a sharp beep echoed from the hallway console. Marcus’s voice crackled through the intercom speaker.

"Julian, we have a security breach on the perimeter servers. Someone is trying to wipe the off-site backups of Victor’s confession from an external IP address."

Julian’s jaw tightened. "Trace it."

"We already did," Marcus replied grimly. "It's coming from an abandoned warehouse in the financial district—owned by a shell corporation registered under Conrad's private offshore accounts."

Julian turned back to Hannah. "I have to go."

"I'm coming with you," Hannah said immediately.
