Chapter 2 - The Confession of Victor Blackthorne

Julian caught Sloane’s wrist inches from the screen, his fingers clamping down like a steel cuff. She flinched, her carefully maintained composure cracking for the first time in a decade. Around them, the restaurant patrons held their breath, cell phones raised, capturing every micro-expression of the city's most powerful family.
On the small screen, Victor Blackthorne sat in his high-backed leather armchair in the Fifth Avenue penthouse. The patriarch looked frail, his breathing shallow, but his eyes burned with the ruthless clarity that had built the Blackthorne shipping and real estate empire.
"If you are watching this, Julian, then Arthur succeeded," Victor's raspy voice echoed through the quiet dining room. "And you have finally discovered that the foundation of our family is rotten."
Conrad stepped forward, his face draining of color. "It's a deepfake. The old man was senile at the end. Julian, don't listen to this garbage—"
"Quiet, Conrad," Julian commanded without looking away from the screen. His voice was dangerously soft, a precursor to a storm.
Victor continued on the recording, leaning closer to the camera lens. "Seven years ago, Sloane and Conrad manufactured a scandal to drive Hannah Mercer away. They forged documents claiming she aborted your child, Julian. They threatened her life, and when I tried to intervene, they isolated me. They wanted control of the board. They wanted the Blackthorne trust entirely in their hands."
Julian slowly turned his head to look at Sloane. "Is this true?"
Sloane swallowed hard, her voice trembling slightly before she forced it back into professional coldness. "Julian, your father was medicated. He imagined betrayals everywhere. Think about the company's stock—if this tape gets out to the media, the entire conglomerate will lose billions in hours. We have to contain this immediately."
"Contain it?" Hannah stepped between Julian and his lawyer, her eyes blazing with seven years of unheeded grief. "You destroyed my life. You had me followed, threatened me with prison, and forced me to raise my daughter in hiding, terrified that men in black suits would come take her away in the middle of the night."
Maya tugged on Hannah's jacket. "Mommy, are these the bad guys?"
Julian knelt down, bringing himself eye-level with the six-year-old. For the first time, he saw the undeniable truth in the shape of her jaw, the curve of her smile, and the fierce intelligence in her gray eyes. His chest tightened with a suffocating wave of realization and fury.
"Yes, Maya," Julian whispered, his hand gently resting on her small shoulder. "They are. But I promise you, no one will ever hurt you or your mother again."
Conrad sneered, regaining some of his arrogant posture. "And what are you going to do, Julian? Hand the company over to a penniless nurse and her bastard child? You think the board will support this? Without us, you're just a man with a broken legacy."
Julian stood up slowly, towering over his half brother. The security guards, recognizing where true power lay in the room, shifted their alignment away from Conrad and Sloane, surrounding the table to block any exits.
"The board answers to the majority shareholder," Julian said coldly. He pulled out his own phone, dialing a number. "Marcus, call an emergency meeting for midnight. Lock down the downtown headquarters. Anyone associated with Sloane Avery's compliance division is to be escorted off the premises immediately."

Sloane’s knees buckled slightly, but she caught herself against a mahogany pillar. "You're destroying everything we built."
"No," Julian replied, handing the evidence phone to his head of security with strict instructions to backup the file to three secure off-site servers. "I'm finally cleaning house."
