Chapter 1 - The Gathering Storm (Continued)

The digital clock on the bedside table read 3:15 AM. Harold Bennett sat in the darkness of his sprawling study, the cool blue light of the monitor illuminating the lines etched deeply into his face. He had spent a lifetime reading balance sheets, predicting market crashes, and sniffing out corporate deceit. Yet, he had been utterly blind to the rot festering within his own flesh and blood.
His children did not see a father; they saw an obstacle. An ATM with a ticking clock.
Harold opened a secure digital folder on his laptop, bypassing three-factor authentication with his own biometric key. There, neatly categorized by corporate investigators and personal lawyers, were the private expense reports of Grant, Vanessa, and Cole.
Grant, despite pulling a seven-figure salary as executive vice president, had been quietly siphoning funds from the regional distribution centers through shell companies. Vanessa had used the family foundation's charity gala accounts to finance her luxury lifestyle, writing off European yacht rentals as "donor cultivation retreats." And Cole—well, Cole’s debts to offshore gambling syndicates were creeping dangerously close to seven figures, debts that were beginning to attract the attention of men who didn't care about corporate titles.
Harold’s jaw tightened. He reached for his phone and dialed a direct, encrypted line.
"Mr. Bennett?" a cautious, raspy voice answered on the second ring. It was Arthur Vance, Harold’s head of security and his most loyal confidant for over thirty years. "It’s past three in the morning. Are you alright? Should I send a medical team?"
"I'm fine, Arthur," Harold replied, his voice steady, devoid of the fatigue that had plagued him at the hospital. "I need you to do something for me. Something unorthodox."
"Name it, sir."
"I am rewriting the final clauses of the estate trust tomorrow morning. But before that document is sealed, I need a live-fire test. A physical test of character for the three heirs... and for everyone else dwelling within these gates."
Arthur fell silent for a moment. "What kind of test, Mr. Bennett?"
"I want all security cameras around the main gates and the staff quarters disabled for the next twenty-four hours, except for your private feed. I want my personal staff granted a day off—all except young Elena and her mother."
"Elena? The laundress's daughter?" Arthur asked, surprised.
"The very same," Harold said softly. "And as for me, Arthur... I won't be sleeping in my bedroom tomorrow night. I want you to prepare a complete disfigurement kit. Old clothes, theatrical ash, fake scars, dirt, and a synthetic grey beard."

Arthur caught on instantly, a low gasp escaping his lips. "You can't be serious, sir. Walking the estate grounds as an outcast? Your heart—"
"My heart is already dying, Arthur," Harold interrupted, his voice cutting through the protest like cold steel. "Let it finish the job in the real world, rather than ticking away in a gilded cage surrounded by vultures. Meet me in the guest house basement at dawn. Bring the disguise."
