Chapter 7 - The Day of Reckoning

Six months later, the criminal trial concluded. With Lila’s taped deposition handled delicately by Dr. Ramos and the prosecution, Richard had no leverage left. Facing mounting federal charges and overwhelming physical evidence, he pleaded guilty to all counts.

The judge sentenced him to twenty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of early parole.

Harper sat in the gallery on the final day of sentencing. When Richard was led out in chains, he looked over at her, his eyes filled with regret and defeat. But Harper felt no anger or desire for revenge—only an overwhelming sense of relief.
