Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Night

Within forty-five minutes, a soft knock echoed at Harper's door. Detective Marcus Vance arrived accompanied by Dr. Elena Ramos, a child trauma specialist certified by the family court system.
While Dr. Ramos sat with Lila in the living room—using specialized drawing tools and gentle, open-ended storytelling techniques—Marcus took Harper aside in the dining area.
"What did Richard tell you when he dropped her off?" Marcus asked, opening a notepad.
"He didn't even come up," Harper replied, her hands wrapped tightly around a cold mug of tea. "He dropped her at the curb outside the lobby, honked, and sped off. He claimed he had an urgent business emergency."
Dr. Ramos walked into the kitchen an hour later, her expression solemn but determined. She held up several drawings Lila had made. One showed a dark room with a small figure hiding inside a closet, while a shadowy figure stood outside near heavy duffel bags and men with flashlights.
"Harper," Dr. Ramos said softly. "Lila wasn't subjected to physical abuse in the traditional sense, but what Richard did is severe emotional endangerment and criminal coercion. Richard was using his apartment—and your daughter—as a human shield and a lookout while stash drops and illegal contraband exchanges were happening in his residence late at night. He forced her to sit in pitch darkness inside a hidden pantry while dangerous men entered his apartment."
Harper let out a gasped breath. Richard hadn’t just been neglectful; he was involved in high-stakes criminal activity and had put their eight-year-old daughter in the direct line of fire of dangerous criminals.

Suddenly, Harper's phone buzzed on the counter. The caller ID flashed: RICHARD.
Marcus immediately signaled her not to answer, tapping the screen to activate recording apparatus linked to his department trace system.
