Chapter 4 - The Gathering Evidence

The phone rang until it hit voicemail. Seconds later, a text message popped up on Harper's screen:

“Did Lila say anything to you? She left her favorite stuffed animal in my car. I’m coming back up to drop it off.”

Marcus looked at the message and turned to his officers. "He's probing to see if she talked. He realizes he made a mistake."

"What do we do?" Harper asked, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"We text him back neutrally," Marcus instructed. "Tell him Lila is already asleep and that he can leave it at the front desk. Keep him calm until my squad establishes a perimeter outside your building."

Harper typed the message with steady fingers, channeling every ounce of motherly strength. Richard replied suspiciously: “I’ll bring it up myself.”

Outside, unmarked police cruisers quietly maneuvered into position around the apartment block. Detective Vance coordinated with narcotics and federal marshals, who had already been quietly building a file on Richard’s recent association with an offshore smuggling network. They had lacked direct entry warrants for his private properties—until now.

Lila’s explicit testimony regarding the locked hidden pantry, the heavy duffel bags, and the dark exchanges gave the police the emergency probable cause they needed.

Dr. Ramos sat with Harper, reassuring her. "Lila is incredibly perceptive. She knew something was deeply wrong, and her trust in you was stronger than her father's threats. That trust is what saved her tonight."
