Chapter 2 - The Call That Changed Everything

Harper felt a cold spike of adrenaline shoot through her veins. Her instinct as a mother superseded the sheer horror threatening to paralyze her. She pulled Lila into a firm, loving embrace, stroking her soft curls while taking deep, slow breaths so her daughter wouldn't feel her trembling.

"You did nothing wrong, Lila," Harper whispered gently into her daughter's hair. "You were so brave to tell me. The game is over now, okay? Mommy is taking care of everything."

Lila nodded against her chest, her small shoulders finally relaxing as the burden of secrecy lifted. Harper led her into the bedroom, poured her a glass of warm milk, and put on her favorite animated movie. Once Lila was safely distracted, Harper stepped out into the kitchen, closed the door tightly, and pulled out her phone.

Her thumb hovered over the screen. She didn't call the standard police dispatch line first. Instead, she dialed a direct number she had kept saved for three years—a number she prayed she’d never have to use again.

"Detective Vance," a deep voice answered on the third ring.

"Marcus... it’s Harper," she said, her voice shaking despite her best efforts to hold it together. "It’s about Richard. Lila just came back from his apartment. She told me about a 'game' he made her play."

The line went silent for two sharp seconds. Marcus Vance, a senior detective in the Special Victims and Family Crimes Unit and an old friend of Harper's late father, immediately changed his tone from professional routine to hyper-vigilant urgency.

"Tell me everything, Harper. Word for word."

Harper recounted Lila’s exact words: the darkened rooms, the forced silence, the strict orders not to tell her mother, and the threats that Harper would disappear if Lila spoke up. As she spoke, the pieces of Richard’s recent erratic behavior—his sudden cash flow, his late-night visits, his desperate demands for unmonitored visitation—began to fit together into a chilling picture.

"Listen to me carefully," Marcus said, his voice quiet and commanding. "Do not contact Richard. Do not answer his texts. I am sending a specialized child advocate unit and a team to your apartment right now. We need to document everything legally so he can never lay a finger on her again."

Harper leaned against the counter, tears finally spilling over. "Is she going to be safe, Marcus?"

"I give you my word, Harper. The moment he forced that child into hiding and threats, he crossed the line into felony territory. By tonight, the legal net closes."
