Chapter 10 - Sunshine After the Storm
Five years after that quiet evening when a little girl whispered her secret, the Mercer household celebrated Lila’s thirteenth birthday.
The backyard was decorated with twinkling fairy lights, colorful banners, and tables laden with food. Friends from school, neighbors, Dr. Ramos, and Marcus were all gathered around, laughing and sharing stories.
Lila stood at the center of the lawn, glowing with confidence and happiness. She blew out the candles on her cake to a chorus of cheers.
Later that evening, as the guests began to head home, Harper and Lila sat together on the porch swing, watching the stars fill the night sky. The breeze was soft and warm.
Lila leaned her head against her mother’s shoulder. "Mom?"
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"I was thinking today about how happy our life is."
Harper wrapped her arm around her daughter, pulling her tight. "Me too, Lila. Every single day."
"We're completely safe now, aren't we?" Lila asked softly, looking up at the sky.
