Chapter 8 - The Battle for the Family

William was overwhelmed by Clara's grace and forgiveness. The following morning, he did not go to his venture capital office. Instead, he summoned his head of legal affairs and the executive board of Carter Capital to his private study.
Within three hours, William used his controlling shares to initiate a complete, public reinvestigation of the five-year-old accounting scandal. By afternoon, the former executive responsible for the fraud was officially reported to federal authorities, and a press release was drafted exonerating Clara Bennett, restoring her professional reputation, and offering her a multi-million-dollar financial settlement for wrongful termination and damages.
When William handed her the legal documents in the living room, Clara stared at the paper in disbelief.
"This is yours, Clara," William said softly. "It’s what you were owed five years ago. You never have to clean another house again unless you choose to."
Before Clara could process the magnitude of the moment, the front gate buzzer rang. Vanessa had returned, accompanied by a high-powered family law attorney, determined to enforce a court summons for emergency custody of Mason and Luke, claiming William was an unfit father who left his children with "unqualified domestic help."
Vanessa walked into the living room, her lawyer behind her, holding a stack of legal papers. "We are here to serve the papers, William. I'm taking the boys for the weekend, starting today."
Mason and Luke stepped out from behind the sofa, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Noah.
"We're not going with you," Mason said, his voice firm and unwavering.
"Mason, don't be ridiculous," Vanessa said smoothly, taking a step toward him. "I'm your mother. I can give you everything you want."
"You gave us up," Luke said, looking his mother in the eye without fear for the first time in three years. "Dad is here. Clara is here. Noah is here. This is our family."
William stepped forward, placing a comforting hand on both of his sons' shoulders. "You heard them, Vanessa. My legal team has already filed a motion based on abandonment. If you take this to court, every detail of your disappearance and your lack of support will be part of the public record."

Vanessa looked at her sons, then at William, and finally at Clara, who stood beside the boys with quiet strength. She realized that the boys were no longer the fragile, desperate children she had left behind. They were whole again, surrounded by a fortress of genuine love that no money or high-priced lawyer could break.
With a bitter scowl, Vanessa turned around and walked out of the house, this time for good.
