Chapter 7 - Secrets Revealed

That night, after Mason, Luke, and Noah were finally tucked into bed, William sat in his study, staring out at the rain. The confrontation with Vanessa had reopened old wounds, but it had also brought absolute clarity. He realized how close he had come to losing his family forever, and who had truly saved them.

He walked into the kitchen, where Clara was finishing drying the late-night tea cups.

"Clara," William said softly, stepping into the room. "I want to thank you. For what you said to Vanessa... and for everything you've done for Mason and Luke."

Clara smiled gently, placing a cup down. "They are good boys, Mr. Carter. They just needed to know they weren't going to be abandoned again."

William hesitated, reaching into his suit pocket. He pulled out a small, folded document he had found earlier that day while searching through old human resources archives for his firm—a search prompted by a sudden, haunting memory of Clara's full name on her employment tax forms.

"Clara... I need to ask you something," William said, his voice laced with genuine remorse. "Your full name is Clara Elizabeth Bennett. Five years ago, you worked at Apex Financial, a subsidiary of my firm, Carter Capital."

Clara froze. The color drained from her face as she looked at the paper in his hand.

"I looked into the old files today," William continued, stepping closer, his eyes full of sorrow. "The accounting scandal that ruined your career... it wasn't your fault. A former executive on my board framed your team to cover his own embezzlement. I signed off on the restructuring without digging deep enough because I was obsessed with work. I ruined your life five years ago, didn't I?"

Clara stood motionless for a long moment. She slowly sank into a kitchen chair, staring at the polished table.

"I lost my career, my apartment, and my reputation in one week," Clara whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "I was three months pregnant with Noah. No financial firm in the city would hire me. I had to take cleaning jobs just to afford rent and diapers."

"Why didn't you tell me when you took this job?" William asked, kneeling beside her chair, his face pale with guilt. "Why didn't you demand justice?"

Clara looked into William's eyes. "Because at first, I just needed a job to feed my son. But then I saw Mason and Luke. I saw two little boys who were drowning in pain, and a father who was too lost in his own grief to see it. I realized that holding onto hatred wasn't going to heal my life or help yours. The past is broken, William. But the present doesn't have to be."
