Chapter 5 - The Unexpected Storm

Over the next month, the Carter household transformed. The cold, sterile mansion began to feel like a home. William began coming home early from work, leaving his briefcase by the door, and sitting on the floor to help Mason and Luke with their homework. The boys no longer played destructive pranks. Instead, they took their role as "older brothers" to little Noah very seriously, teaching him how to ride a tricycle in the wide driveway and building elaborate blanket forts in the living room.

Clara remained the steady anchor of the home. Her warmth had melted the ice in the house, and William found himself increasingly drawn to her. He noticed how her presence brought peace to rooms that had been filled with sorrow for years. He began lingering in the kitchen in the mornings, sharing quiet cups of coffee with her before the boys woke up, learning about her quiet strength and her deep love for her son.

However, the fragile peace was shattered on a stormy Thursday evening.

A high-profile charity gala was being hosted at a luxury hotel downtown, an event William was required to attend as a board member. Clara had agreed to stay late at the mansion to watch all three boys until William returned.

Around 9:00 PM, while the rain lashed against the tall glass windows of the estate, a sleek black car pulled up the long driveway. The heavy oak front door unlocked, and the sound of high heels echoed through the foyer.

Clara came out of the kitchen, expecting William, but stopped dead in her tracks. Standing in the entrance hall was a woman dressed in an expensive designer coat, dripping with diamond jewelry, her eyes scanning the grand staircase with cold familiarity.

It was Vanessa—William’s ex-wife, and the mother who had abandoned Mason and Luke three years ago.

"Who are you?" Vanessa asked, eyeing Clara's simple attire with immediate disdain. "Where are my sons?"

Clara felt a cold chill run down her spine. Before she could answer, the sound of footsteps echoed from the top of the stairs. Mason and Luke were standing at the railing, looking down.

Luke’s voice trembled. "Mom?"
