Chapter 6 - Ghosts of the Past

Vanessa’s face lit up with a practiced, elegant smile as she spread her arms wide. "Oh, my sweet boys! Look how big you’ve grown!"

Mason did not move. His grip on the wooden railing tightened until his knuckles turned white. Luke took one hesitant step down the stairs, but stopped, looking back at his older brother. The three years of silence, the unreturned phone calls, and the lingering ache of abandonment hung in the air between them.

"What are you doing here, Vanessa?"

The stern, deep voice came from the front doorway. William had returned early from the gala, sensing the worsening weather, and was now standing drenched in the entryway, his eyes locked on his ex-wife.

Vanessa turned around, smoothing her designer coat. "William. Is that how you greet the mother of your children? I came back for what’s mine."

"You gave up your rights to this house and these boys three years ago when you walked out," William said coldly, stepping into the foyer and placing himself between Vanessa and the staircase where his sons stood. "You haven't called them in eighteen months."

"I was building a life!" Vanessa snapped, her composure cracking. "And now I’m back. My lawyer will be filing for joint custody tomorrow morning. I have a right to be in my sons' lives, and I won't let a glorified maid and a distant father keep me away."

She cast a sneering glance toward Clara, who stood quietly near the kitchen entrance, holding Noah’s hand as the little boy watched the scene unfold with wide eyes.

"Clara is not a maid," Mason’s voice rang out from the top of the stairs, surprisingly strong and clear. "She’s the person who stayed when you left."

Vanessa looked up, stung by the sharp rejection in her son's voice. She opened her mouth to argue, but William took a step forward, his expression harder than any businessman had ever seen in a boardroom.

"Leave my house, Vanessa," William said softly, every word laced with quiet fury. "If you want to talk to my lawyers, you have their number. But you will not break my children's hearts a second time."

Realizing she had lost control of the situation, Vanessa glared at William, swept her eyes over Clara with bitter contempt, and turned on her heel, storming out into the pouring rain. The door slammed shut, leaving a heavy silence in the grand hall.
