Chapter 4 - Unspoken Truths

Mason and Luke stood frozen, their faces turning pale. They had expected anger, but the cold finality in their father's voice signaled that the ultimate rejection had finally arrived. He was giving up on them completely.

"Dad, please—" Luke started, his voice cracking.

"No," William cut him off, staring at them with disappointed eyes. "I have tolerated the pranks, the destruction, and the disrespect. But I will not allow you to harm people in this house."

"Wait, Mr. Carter," Clara's voice broke through the tension. She was still sitting on the floor, holding Noah, but her gaze was fixed squarely on William. "You are misunderstanding what happened."

William turned to her, surprised. "Clara, you don't have to defend them. They put your son in danger."

"No, sir," Clara said firmly, standing up with Noah in her arms. "When Noah started having trouble breathing, Luke ran to get me immediately. And Mason was right beside him, trying to comfort him. They didn't hurt Noah—they helped save him."

Mason looked up at Clara in absolute disbelief. He knew he had started the cruelty by putting the toy out of reach. Clara knew it too, yet she was choosing to focus on the moment he had tried to fix it. She was protecting him from his own father.

William looked between Clara and his two sons. For the first time, he saw something other than defiance in Mason and Luke's eyes—he saw pure, unadulterated fear. They weren't evil; they were terrified children who believed they were unlovable.

"Is that true?" William asked softly, looking directly at Mason.

Mason swallowed hard, tears finally spilling over his eyelashes. "I... I put his train up high because I was being mean," Mason admitted, his chest heaving. "I'm sorry. I'm really sorry, Dad. Don't send us away."

Luke ran over and wrapped his arms around his brother's waist, sobbing quietly. William felt a sudden, sharp ache in his chest. The corporate wall he had built around his heart for three years shattered in an instant. He dropped to his knees, wrapping his long arms around both of his sons, pulling them into a tight embrace he hadn't offered since his wife had left.

"I'm not sending you away," William whispered into Mason's hair, his own eyes burning with tears. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, boys. I'm not going anywhere."

From the doorway, Clara watched the family reconcile, a gentle smile touching her lips. She quietly carried Noah out of the room to give them privacy. But as she walked down the hall, she pulled an old envelope from her apron pocket—a legal letter from five years ago regarding her wrongful termination, bearing the corporate seal of Carter Capital. She looked at it for a moment, then placed it back in her pocket. The past was full of ghosts, but for the first time, the present held a glimmer of hope.
