Chapter 9 - The Truth Revealed

Claire pulled the baby into her embrace, burying her face in his tiny blanket while sobbing tears of pure relief. David stood over us, his hands shaking as he helped me to my feet.

"Mom... I am so, so sorry," David choked out, pulling me into a fierce, tight hug. "We never meant for you to be in danger. The FBI... they’ve been tracking Marcus for months. They used us as bait to draw him out because he had threatened our family. But we didn't know he would move so fast... we didn't know he had gotten inside the house."

"The poisoned bottle..." I whispered, looking between them as the adrenaline finally began to ebb away, leaving me weak and trembling. "Was that..."

"A setup," a calm, authoritative voice interrupted. It was an older man in a tailored suit stepping out onto the roof behind David, holding a badge. "Agent Vance, FBI. Ma'am, your son and his wife cooperated with us to trap a dangerous fugitive. The sedative in that bottle was a harmless substitute we swapped in before they left, designed to make Marcus think he had successfully infiltrated the house. But we severely underestimated his timeline. You saved this baby's life today by noticing what didn't add up."

I looked down at my hands, which were finally beginning to steady. I had walked into what I thought was a simple babysitting afternoon, only to find myself thrust into the middle of a federal sting operation. Yet, standing there surrounded by my family, safe under the fading evening sky, a profound sense of peace washed over me.
