Chapter 1 - The Warm Bottle

My son and his wife asked me to look after their two-month-old baby while they went out shopping. But no matter how gently I rocked him or how desperately I tried to soothe him, he would not stop crying. Something deep inside me told me immediately that something was seriously wrong.

The bottle was still warm when the fear began creeping up my arms.

It rested on the kitchen counter with two ounces still inside, a thin film of milk coating the plastic. The dryer thumped in the laundry room, slow and steady, while the late-afternoon sunlight pressed against the porch window and the little American flag outside continued tapping softly against the glass.

I had cared for children before. I knew babies cried. I knew there were moments when nothing seemed to work. But this was different.

His little body kept tensing every time I picked him up, and the sound of his cry changed from frustration to something that made my stomach tighten. I checked his diaper. I checked his temperature. I walked him from the living room to the kitchen and back again, whispering every calming word I could remember.

Then my eyes landed on the bottle. Two ounces were still inside. My son and his wife had told me exactly how much he usually drank, and I knew something about this feeding did not add up. I picked up the bottle again and noticed something I had almost missed the first time.

The milk was still warm. But the baby had been crying for far too long. I called my son, expecting him to answer quickly. Instead, the phone rang until it went quiet.

I stared at the screen, then at my grandson's tiny hands gripping my shirt. A second later, I noticed something else on the counter beside the bottle that made me stop moving.

It was something so ordinary that I had almost ignored it. But suddenly, it changed the way I looked at the entire afternoon. I picked up the object and looked closer.

My hands started shaking. Because whatever had happened while I was trying to comfort that baby had started before I even realized there was a problem. And I knew I had only one choice: I had to find out the truth before my son and his wife came home.

What I discovered next made me question whether I had been brought there just to babysit… or whether someone needed me there for a completely different reason.
