Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

Marcus raised his arm, leveling it directly toward David down on the lawn.

"Drop it!" a booming voice echoed from below.

Before Marcus could pull the trigger, federal agents swarmed the yard, weapons drawn. But Marcus grabbed the edge of the roof, his eyes darting wildly toward me. In a blind panic, he lunged in my direction, desperate to use us as human shields to buy his escape.

My maternal instincts, honed by decades of protecting my children, flared into pure fury. As Marcus lunged forward, his boot slipped on the dew-slicked shingles. Without thinking, I planted my feet firmly against the roof tiles and gave him a powerful, well-placed shove right in the chest.

Marcus let out a startled yell as his footing gave way entirely. He tumbled backward off the edge of the roof, landing squarely in the soft, overgrown rose bushes below with a loud, heavy crash. Within seconds, multiple agents descended upon him, clicking heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

Silence washed over the front yard, save for the steady wail of the police sirens and the softer, exhausted crying of my grandson.

David and Claire raced up the front steps, bursting through the front door and rushing out onto the second-story balcony that connected to the roof. Claire dropped to her knees right beside me, tears streaming down her face as she reached out with trembling arms.
