Chapter 6 - Uncovering the Past

"Who are you?" I called out, my voice shaking but laced with defiance as I shielded the baby with my body.
"Someone who wants what your son stole from me," the man replied, his tone chillingly calm. "David thinks he can play games, running off to the suburbs, pretending to be a family man. But debts don't just disappear, Sarah. And neither do secrets."
The realization hit me like a lightning bolt. Marcus. It was indeed Marcus, or someone tied deep within David's forgotten underworld. Years ago, David had fallen in with the wrong crowd, dabbling in corporate espionage and financial theft before turning his life around. Or so I had believed. Had David ever truly left that life behind? Or had he brought danger straight to his wife and child's doorstep?
Outside, the heavy thud of a shoulder slammed against the bedroom door. The wood groaned, the frame splintering slightly under the immense pressure.

A second blow cracked the lock further. I knew the door wouldn't hold much longer. Desperation drove me to scan the room. My eyes locked onto the master bathroom. It had a small utility window leading out to the flat roof of the porch below. It was our only way out.
With a final, desperate shove, I rushed into the bathroom, kicking open the window just as the bedroom door crashed inward with a deafening splinter of wood and metal.
