Chapter 7 - Escape onto the Roof

I hoisted myself through the narrow bathroom window, the cool afternoon air hitting my flushed skin. Balancing carefully on the sloping shingles of the porch roof, I pulled myself out, keeping a tight, unbreakable grip on my grandson. The baby let out a sharp cry of protest, but I hushed him frantically.

"Shh, sweetheart, Grandma's got you. We're safe, we're going to be okay."

Behind me, a heavy boot stepped onto the bathroom floor tiles. "I hear you out there," Marcus's voice echoed mockingly through the open window. "You can't run, Sarah. The whole perimeter is covered."

I inched my way along the roof ridge, looking down at the front lawn. To my utter astonishment, flashing red and blue lights illuminated the driveway. A police cruiser had pulled up right behind David's car, which had just screeched to a halt in the middle of the street.

David and Claire tumbled out of the passenger side of a second unmarked vehicle, flanked by men in tactical gear. David looked up, his eyes locking onto mine on the roof.

"Mom! Get down! Stay down!" David screamed, his face contorted with absolute terror.

At that exact moment, Marcus climbed out of the bathroom window behind me, a heavy, dark silhouette against the fading sunlight, holding a cold, metallic object in his hand.
