Chapter 2 - Unmasking the Deception

"Mia, sweetheart, why aren't you following the steps?" Claire's voice echoed through the tiny speaker, cold and calculated despite the faux-tender tone. "Is he threatening you?"

I felt a cold chill run down my spine, but I forced myself to remain completely calm for Mia's sake. Mia looked at me with wide, terrified eyes. I shook my head gently, signaling for her to stay quiet, and offered her a warm, reassuring smile. I took a deep breath, picked up the small recording unit carefully by its sides without blocking the microphone, and spoke directly into it.

"Claire. I hear you. And Mia is completely safe. She's sitting right across from me, eating her dinner, and telling me the truth."

A long silence stretched over the channel. The static hummed faintly before Claire responded, her voice dropping the sweet act entirely. Gone was the gentle mother; in her place was a sharp, venomous tone. "You shouldn't have interfered, Mark. You don't know what you're dealing with."

"I know enough," I replied steadily. "I know you've been forcing a seven-year-old child to participate in an elaborate scheme to manipulate and alienate me. Why, Claire? What was the point of all this?"

"You were always just a stepping stone, Mark," she sneered. "A reliable income, a nice house, and a convenient scapegoat for a custody battle and financial settlement. I was building a record of emotional distress and incompatibility. Who do you think a court would believe? A grieving mother or a stepfather who makes her child cry every time they are alone?"

The sheer malice behind her words was horrifying. She had used her own daughter as a pawn, weaponizing Mia's innocence to engineer a legal and financial trap. Mia started to tremble, tears welling up in her eyes again, not out of fear of me, but out of the devastating realization of what her mother was doing.

"I'm turning this off now," I said firmly into the recorder. "And when you get back, we will have a very different conversation." I pressed the power button, cutting the signal, and setting the device down.

Mia looked up, her voice small and fragile. "Are you mad at me, Daddy?"

I walked around the table, knelt beside her chair, and looked her straight in the eyes. "Never, Mia. You were so brave today. You did the right thing. I promise you, I will protect you, no matter what happens."
