Chapter 8 - The Aftermath and Fall of Graham

A few weeks after the final verdict, Graham asked to meet for coffee during a visitation handoff. I agreed to meet in a public cafe near Lucy’s school.

He sat across from me, looking down at his untouched coffee cup. "Annika," he began, his voice raspy. "I... I need to apologize. Seeing the court documents, seeing how Lucy is doing now... I realized how blind I was. Vanessa manipulated me into believing you were the enemy."

I looked at him calmly, refusing to offer him easy absolution. "Vanessa didn't hold the microphone, Graham. You were her father. You saw her hands trembling, and you told me not to turn it into a problem. You chose your mistress’s ego over your daughter’s safety."

He swallowed hard, tears welling in his eyes. "I lost everything. My family barely speaks to me, Vanessa emptied my secondary account before she left, and my daughter looks at me like I’m a stranger."

"Then use your visitation time to earn her trust back," I said softly but firmly. "Not by making her perform, and not by trying to fix her. Just by listening to her." I stood up, left money for my tea, and walked away. He was no longer my burden to carry.
