Chapter 2 - The Unedited Recording

The video file attached to Nora’s message took twenty seconds to download, but those twenty seconds felt like an eternity. When I hit play, the familiar glare of the hotel dining room appeared on my phone screen. I watched the painful ritual again—Lucy trembling, Vanessa’s serene, controlling smile, Graham’s quiet enabling—and then watched myself step in, wrap my daughter in her cardigan, and lead her toward the elevators.

What followed made my blood run cold.

The moment the heavy wooden doors clicked shut behind us, the tension in the room snapped, but not into remorse. Vanessa let out a light, musical laugh and patted Graham’s arm. "She’s just emotional," Vanessa whispered loudly enough for the whole table to hear. "She’s letting Lucy’s handicap define her. We need to get that child away from her, Graham, before she ruins her development completely."

Graham did not defend me. He didn't even mention our daughter's fear. Instead, he took a slow sip of his wine and looked around the table of twenty silent relatives. "Annika is becoming unstable," he announced calmly, his voice cold and calculated. "You all saw it. She’s irrational, hostile, and actively sabotaging Lucy’s progress because she can’t handle Vanessa being a positive role model. I’m filing for full emergency custody next week. I need all of you to sign witness statements about tonight."
